SC Field Hockey played Chambersburg High School at the newly renovated Memorial Field for State High’s season opener. This season’s biggest change, in addition to the restrictions due to COVID, is the move from two 30-minute halves to four 15-minute quarters by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Field Hockey Rules Committee.

Chambersburg came out strong in the first quarter and with 12:19 remaining in the first quarter, number 23, Ashlyn Bartonof Chambersburg, scored the game’s first goal. State College fought back, and Olivia Miller tipped a shot from Rebecca Bonness into the goal at 8:34 to tie the game 1-1. State High turned up the heat in the second quarter as they battled Chambersburg for possession. Rebecca Bonness had a strong shot on goal that was blocked by the body of a Chambersburg player and was awarded a penalty stroke, so with 4:17 remaining in the second quarter Rebecca Bonness scored on the stroke to take State College up by one. State College continued to pressure Chambersburg’s defense and with 13:13 remaining, Phebe Herlocher hit a hard shot to the back of the cage for State High’s third goal. Chambersburg tried to turn the tide, but was unable to stop the ball from moving through the center of the field and before the end of the third quarter with :26 seconds remaining, Maddie Tambroni passed the ball to Rebecca Bonness who scored her second goal of the game. It was 4-1 at the beginning of the 4th quarter and State College continued to improve their passing game around the struggling Chambersburg defense. Finally, at 8:15 Nicole Zeiler put the ball in the back of the cage to make it 5-1 for the final score.
