State College Field Hockey ties Cumberland Valley

State College Field Hockey hosted Cumberland Valley on the SCAHS North Turf on Wednesday night. This was a rematch against CV as one of only two teams SC lost to earlier this season. From the beginning of the game both teams fought to control the ball with a fast-paced attacking game and strong ball movement. After battling for control in the first quarter, CV was the first to strike when, with 11:30 remaining in the second quarter, Alyssa Hoffman scored on an assist from K.K. Sauve to put CV up 0-1. State College quickly answered as Maddie Tambroni drove a hard corner shot toward the goal. The ball was deflected by CV’s goalkeeper, Grace Meinke, and State College’s Maddy Shomo, as she has several times during the season, deflected the ball into the cage to tie the game 1-1. Despite SC’s ball movement and strong defensive play during the third quarter, with 4:12 on the clock, CV’s Taylor Whitehead passed the ball to teammate Ami Mattingly who scored again to put CV up by one.  SC continued to fight and dominate possession during the fourth quarter when finally with only 2:45remaining in the game, Rebecca Bonness drove the ball into the circle and scored on a powerful reverse shot to tie up the game 2-2. At the end of the fourth quarter the game remained tied and went into a 15 minute, 7v7 OT. Both teams had opportunities to score during OT, but SC dominated play and had 6 shots to CV’s one shot. At the end of regulation play, neither team was able to score and the game ended in a tie, SC 2 – CV 2. SC had 7 penalty corners, 12 shots on goal and 7 goalkeeper saves to CV’s 9 penalty corners, 9 shots on goal and 10 goalkeeper saves. State College is now 6-2-1 for the season and will host their District 6 rival, Mifflin County at Memorial Field on Thursday, October 22 for their“Stick it to Cancer” pink gamewhere they will be honoring all those we have lost and those that won the battle against breast cancer.
