State College outlasts Mifflin County girls soccer

LEWISTOWN – Despite the best efforts of the defense, Mifflin County struggled to get going offensively as the Huskies fell to arch-rival State College Little Lions by the final score of 1-0 in Mid-Penn Conference girls soccer action.

Issues with injuries and quarantined players continued to cause problems for the Mifflin County offense as several players were playing in positions that they were not used to playing in.

Despite all that, the Huskies were able to get the ball on the State College side of the field. But we were not able to get a shot off. Even when Mifflin County made a shot, the Little Lions were able to pick it up and prevent a score from happening.

One example came early on in the game as Sarah Henry launched a header that was stopped by the State College defense.

The lone goal of the game came not long after that as Claire Vollmer took on Mifflin County goalkeeper Bailey McNitt where McNitt knocked away Vollmerás shot on goal. However, the ball went right to Natalie Ausherman who drove it home to give the Little Lions a 1-0 lead.

State College did not let up after the goal as the Little Lions kept the Mifflin County defense busy as Alice Gipe fired a shot that was stopped by McNitt.

Alyssa Kramer then took her turn to try and extend the State College lead but once again, McNitt stepped up big time and tipped the ball over the net preventing another shot from going in.

Mifflin County did create an opportunity to even the game as sophomore Brynn Knepp launched a rocket that sailed over the net.

The Huskies were held to just two shots on goal opportunities for the entire first half while State College had 7 shots on goal.

The Little Lions turned up the intensity a bit in the second half putting constant pressure on the Mifflin County offense. But the defense led by Kate Knable, Hailie Alexander-Yohn, Kirsten Milliron and Morgan Breon stood firm and refused many opportunities to even get a shot at McNitt.

Even when the Little Lions were able to slip through the tough Mifflin County defense, State College were having a tough time getting the ball past McNitt who moving all over the place and preventing any more goals from scoring and keeping the Huskies within striking distance.

One of those situations came when Mia Reese of State College found herself in a one on one matchup against McNitt who ended up winning that battle against Reese leaving the score at 1-0.

But the most clutch moment from McNitt came when Mifflin County got a little too aggressive which allowed State Collegeás Kate Lundy an opportunity for a penalty kick against McNitt.

Lundy took the shot heading toward the bottom left corner only to be swatted away by a diving McNitt to prevent the goal from scoring.

For the game, McNitt faced 13 shots on goal and had saved 12 of those shots.

Though fatigue had settled in, Mifflin County refused to quit, as the Huskies continued to press on toward the State College net, just were unable to capitalize.

Mifflin County falls to (6-6-1) overall and (6-2-1) in the Mid-Penn and will travel to Waynesboro on Saturday.
