State College sends four athletes to D1 programs

By Kenny Varner

STATE COLLEGE – With a long legacy of athletes competing on the Division 1 stage, the State College high school athletic program added four more to its distinguished list Wednesday as the Little Lions signed their letters of intent to play at the next level.

First up was swimmer Matt Brownstead who chose to continue his career at the University of Virginia.

“Its such a great feeling to see my dream come to fuition. They have such a great coaching staff at UVA. It’s a really great opportunity for me,” Brownstead said. “I want to thank my parents for supporting me through the entire process.”

Brownstead has been a dominating force for the swimming and diving team.

Track and field runner Zach DeCarmine, who also has numerous accolades in his career, chose Central Michigan as his college of choice and is excited about his choice.

“I chose Central Michigan because when I first stepped on the campus it felt like home. I could really see myself here,” said DeCarmine. “Everyone said you are going to get this feeling when you step there and when I did I knew I was coming here.”

The Little Lions followed with two from the baseball team, both of which were hurlers. They were Jack Hurley, 4-year varsity letter winner, and Joe Nastasi, who was a District champion in football and played for the US Blackhawks baseball team.

Hurley made his choice to head to the Atlantic Coast Conference and become a member of the Virginia Tech squad.

“I decided to go to Virginia tech. The reason I chose it was because when I first stepped on campus I loved it there. I could see myself academically and the baseball program was a perfect fit for me,” Hurley said. “They have great practice facilities, I loved them. I’m really excited about that.”

For Nastasi, he will be keeping his talents more to a local level, choosing to play for Penn State.

“I will be attending Penn State University and what excites me about that I’ve been around it all my life. Just growing up here the environment has been amazing,” said Nastasi. “This is something I’ve wanted to do since I was little. I wanted to grow up and be a part of Penn State.”

All will start school in the upcoming fall.

For State College high school, the success in athletics continues to shine bright as Wednesday’s signings brought to the forefront.
