State College/St.Joseph captures golf titles

Hollidaysburg, PA— Both State College and Saint Joseph’s brought boys District VI golf titles back to Happy Valley on Monday evening.  State College defeated Hollidaysburg and Altoona to win the AAA championship, behind Tyler Nordblom’s (80) individual championship.  The other scores that counted toward the team title came from Kyle Snyder (82), John Olsen (83), and Ryan Battista (88), for a team score of 333.

On the single A side, Saint Joseph’s defeated a four-team field behind individual AA champion, Jack Mangene (72).  Rounding out the Wolves top four scores were Matthew Steyers (79), RJ Marsh (84), and Ryan Peachey (85), for a team score of 320.  It is Saint Joseph’s second title in the last two years.

“It was great to see the kids out there supporting each other today.  A lot of these guys grew up together, playing various sports throughout their younger years.  Now, they’re all grown-up and still competing together, proudly representing Centre County, Happy Valley, and the entire community!”  They are all still pretty good friends, and it is always fun to witness them out there joking around with each other.  It keeps them loose, and the scores showed it today.  We are definitely excited to be working toward the same goals as Coach Wilson and his guys over the next couple weeks.” said, Saint Joseph’s Athletic Director, and Head Golf Coach, Chad Walsh.

The next step for the Saint Joseph’s team will be a sub-regional match-up with the District V champion at Ebensburg Country Club on October 10th for a shot at a second straight state championship berth.  State College will take on champions from Districts V, VIII, IX, and X for a AAA sub-regional at Treasure Lake in Dubois, for their shot at stats on October 11th.

On the individual side, Mangene and Nordblom will lead a field of District VI individual golfers, including Steyers, on October 15th in the Western Regional Tournament at Tom’s Run Golf Club.
