Round three.

After another regular season of two nail biters, the State College and Mifflin County field hockey team played one final time for not only bragging rights between the two foes but also for the right to capture the District 6 championship.

On this night, the win would come to the Little Lions as they battled to take home a 4-0 win over the Lady Huskies.

Early in the season State College defeated Mifflin County in their first meeting while the Huskies beat the Lady Lions 2-1 in overtime in their second meeting.

Playing at Bald Eagle Area High School, the game started out just like the other two as a back and forth battle.

State College took the early advantage after a quick opening run by the Huskies.

Playing on a  turf surface the pace was fast and was an advantage for the Little Lions as they play most of their games on a artificial surface while Mifflin County plays on a natural grass field.

State College started to take an advantage and pushed the ball deep into Mifflin County territory.

However, the Huskies defense was able to take everything the Little Lions threw at them.

Mifflin County had limited spurts into State College defensive side of the field.

But after the first quarter, the two teams were both scoreless.

It seemed like things were going into the intermission the same way but State College had quite the De Ja Vue  moment when Rachel Foster found teammate Quinn Colburn in front of the cage and blasted the ball into the back corner, making it 1-0 with 40 ticks left on the clock.

Ironically, Colburn scored State College’s first goal less than a week ago with :49 seconds.

Going into the intermission the Little Lions led 1-0.

Coming out of the half, Mifflin County drove the ball down into State College territory but was thrawted by the stingy Little Lions defense.

State College struck again at the 8:29 mark of the third when McKenna Burke scored off of an assist from Olivia Miller, upping it to a 2-0 contest.

Going into the final stanza, State College started to sizzle as they scored two in the period to put the game out of reach.

Scoring for State College were Lanie Herlocher and Leah Moyer.

Mifflin County refused to give up but they were t able to penetrate the goal area of the Little Lions.

When the contest’s buzzer sounded, the Little Lions took home the victory and the championship.

For Mifflin County it was a season full of successful highlights and the runner up title for the Lady Huskies.

I’m sure the rivalry will be back in full force next season!
