LEWISTOWN – Hanging on for the “W”!
The Mifflin County Huskies welcomed in the Palmyra Cougars for a conference primetime showdown at Kish Bank Field at Donald Chapman Stadium on Friday night, Homecoming night for Mifflin County. Also honored at the game was World Champion Trent Hidlay before the contest began.
In the end, the Huskies would find a way to gut out a hard fought 8-6 victory over Palmyra.
Mifflin County started on their own 33 but things got off to a bad start as the Huskies would be penalized for a false start that would push them back to the 28. Mifflin County had success on their opening drive only to see Chase Hartung’s pass picked off by Jake Schelhorn on a drive where the Huskies had 26 rushing yards and 23 passing yards. The Cougars’ first drive didn’t amount to much as they would only rush for two yards on zero passing yards. Brenden Crout would have a beauty of a punt his punt would go 52 yards but would be negated after a holding call would be called on Palmyra.
Mifflin County’s Jaxon Strohecker was at his best not only did he score his first varsity touchdown he would also breakout to rush for a tune of 102 yards in a game where everything was clicking for the home team in the running department.
“We just have to keep it going,” said Jaxon Strohecker. “ We will keep learning and keep getting better. This will give us more confidence in the run game knowing that there is a chance for open looks. So this will motivate me and the rest of the team moving forward.”
Mifflin County made the running game a staple in the teams 8-6 win over the Cougars. Brandon Kauffman and Zahir Hill both racked up yards in the win.
Palmyra put together a one play 80-yard scoring drive on a Travis McDanell score following the Strohecker score.
This game was about being behind the sticks. Both teams were uncharacteristic when it came to penalties and after the plays penalties that also led to one ejection for the Cougars.
“ We had to get our run game going and they are an aggressive team but we have played some really good teams the last three weeks,” said Mifflin County coach Shane Breon When asked about how you can carry this momentum into next week against Waynesboro.
“Yeah they have some big boys inside and they’re aggressive too. They play hard so it will be a test for us.They have some nice kids there. To get Strohecker loose and once he gets to the second level he’s a hard dude to bring down. He’s a really great runner in open field. He’s going to be an star for the next few years going forward but hopefully we can take that momentum with our run game into next week because we’re going to need it. But I was really happy with our kids tonight. Our one main focus is getting our pass protection corrected but anytime you can get a win in this division a win is a win that’s all what matters is if you win we did that tonight.”
Mifflin County was good on special teams on offense and defense. Jacob Traxler was big late for Mifflin County getting down field and delivering Easton Zook was good in the return game as well.
Mifflin County will travel to Waynesboro next Friday hoping to make it two straight wins.
