Third time is the charm for Lady Huskies; tops State College in D6 title game

By Kenny Varner

LORETTO – Third time is a charm!!!

After falling to State College twice over the regular season, the MIfflin County softball team took care of the Little Lions when it mattered en route to a Back-to-back championship run.

“Obviously coming into the season we knew lacked experience but we knew we had the capability to get there. We just had to put things all together and accept the rules,” said MIfflin County coach Craig Weston. “Obviously we the results to day we were able to do that.”

Madison Wolfgang was an error away from total perfection, finishing with a no-hitter and an 8-0 victory.

She was in her groove all game, striking out eight in the victory.

Offensively, the Huskies were led by Payton McClure who finished with two doubles and 2 RBIs.

Teammate Dakota Hershberger highlighted the game with a 2-run Homer to left, collecting 2RBIs in a 2-hit effort.

What started out as a pitch duel between State College pitcher Zia Bodner and Wolfgang turned into a runaway in the middle innings.

Neither team was able to reach base in the first three innings as both pitchers were tossing a no-hit shut out.

But in the fourth, the MIfflin County batters made the most of their opportunities, plating four runs.

Leading off the inning, Wolfgang singled to start things off.

With one out, McClure blasted a gapper to left centerfield, scoring Wolfgang on the play.

Hershberger was intentionally walked, putting runners on first and second.

Riley Hine sacrificed McClure to third and Hershberger to second.

Mifflin County caught a break when Sophie McCurdy hit a seemingly easy pop fly to third.

However, the strong wind caused the Little Lion third baseman to misjudge the ball and it bounced off her glove.

With both Hershberger and McClure running on the play, both scored upping the Huskies lead to 3-0.

McCurdy’s time on base was short when Alexis O’Brien blasted a triple easily scoring McCurdy and padding the MIfflin County lead to 4-0.

The Huskies never took their foot off the pedal and sent the side down in the bottom of the inning.

Offensively, the Lady Huskies were not done as the game went into the fifth.

Sharpe led off the inning when she smoked a double into the gap between center and left.

With two out, McClure sent a sizzler down the third baseline, scoring Sharpe.

With two out, Hershberger stepped in. Bodner and the team’s best hitter battled with Hershberger fouling off the ball nine times.

Hershberger finally found the right pitch as she sent a Bodner offering over the wall in left field for the 2-run home run.

Hine kept the inning going as she reached first.

She scored on a McCurdy double, giving Wolfgang and company an 8-0 lead.

That would all that the Huskies would need as Wolfgang refused to allow a walk and took a perfect game into the seventh.

Though the perfect game didn’t stick, the no-hitter did as she captured her second consecutive no-no and while doing that, clinched the District 6 title.
