Trojans split double header with Williamsburg

MOUNT UNION – It was a tale of two games as the Mount Union Trojans took the first game and lost the second in a Inter-County Conference baseball double header Thursday afternoon against the Williamsburg Blue Pirates.

During game one of the double header, the Mount Union bats went right to work going into the bottom of the second inning and the game being tied at one apiece.

The Trojans dropped six runs in the frame and went through the entire lineup. Bryce Danish got the ball rolling with a single to centerfield that scored both Ryan Plank and JeSaun Robinson to make it 3-1. Then it was Cameron Donaldson blasted a double to left that brought home both Landon Chrisemer and Danish making it a 5-1 ballgame. Cainen Atherton sent a single to center bringing in Donaldson and Blaine Hunsinger to make it 7-1.

Mount Union did not stop there as later on in the game with the score being 7-3 heading into the bottom of the third. Ryan Scott smacked a single to right center that scored both Chrisemer and Donaldson.

Then in the bottom half of the fourth inning, Mount Union added three more runs in the frame. Wilson got it started with a triple to center that brought in Plank before Wilson scored after Danish reached on an error at right field. Donaldson then singled in Danish.

The Trojans then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning which completed the ten rule to take game one.

Danish was 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Donaldson went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs.

Wilson got the start for the Trojans and went all five innings for Mount Union and collected seven strikeouts and walked two walks.

However, Mount Union struggled to keep the momentum going in game two as errors were a major factor for the Trojans as for the game they had committed six errors as to three errors in game one for a total of nine errors for the game.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings until the bottom half of the third where the Blue Pirates scored five runs in the frame. The Trojans had two outs and were looking to get out of the inning, Williamsburg had runners on second and third and Lambert Palmer at the plate.

Palmer then started the first of three straight doubles including ones from Dylan Hartman, Dylan Shawver to score four runs. The fifth run was scored by after Luke Uplinger reached on an error at third which allowed Shawver to score.

But Mount Union quickly answered with a five run inning of its own as in the top of the fourth, Danish hammered the ball to deep center field scored three runs, Danish scored the fifth run after an error by the third baseman.

Then down 6-5, Mount Union added on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead as Danish singled in Wilson. Donaldson reached on an error at short that scored Danish before Braylan Knable blasted a double to left field that brought home Donaldson to make it 8-6 Mount Union lead.

However, the Blue Pirates responded with a three run inning of their own as in the bottom half of the sixth, Caydence Hughes reached home plate thanks to a wild pitch and then Caymen Hughes caught the Mount Union defense off guard and hustled his way to score to tie the game. Then Rowan Gorsuch then hit a SAC fly to center that brought in Liam McGregor which ended up being the game winning run.

Danish led the Trojans at the plate going 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in four RBIs. Wilson was 2-for-4 with a triple.

Cody McClain got the start for the Trojans and pitched the first three innings of the game and collected three strikeouts and two walks. Atherton then finished off the final three innings with a strikeout and a walk each.

Mount Union is now (9-2) and will look to rebound today as the Trojans will travel to battle it out with the Penns Valley Rams today.
