Whitehead’s HR helps lead PO to clutch victory over BEA

WINGATE – In a Saturday afternoon match up the Philipsburg-Osceola baseball team picked up an early clutch win over Bald Eagle in a match up between two Mountain League foes.

After a back and forth contest, PO came out the 5-3 road victory.

Picking up the win on the mound was Parker White as he came in relief of starter Dave Meersand.

Meersand went 4 2/3 innings allowing six hits, two earned runs and struck out four.

Parker White and Jeremy Whitehead led the offensive punch for the Mounties as both finished with two hits each. Whitehead would also dominate the RBI column posting four.

Highlighting his performance was a home run shot to left field.

Bald Eagle Kahale Burns helped lead his team at the plate finishing with three hits in the contest.

Teammates Alex Gavlock and Hayden Vaughn both notched RBIs.

Pitcher Tyler Serb took the loss.

After two scoreless innings, Philipsburg-Osceola got on the scoreboard in the third.

Leading off the inning, Nick Coudriet started the rally with a walks.

Ben Gustkey bounced into a fielders choice replacing Coudriet on the base paths.

With two out, White singled past the first baseman, Gustkey moving to third.

Whitehead blasted a 2-run single into center, putting the Mounties in front 2-0.

Bald Eagle cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning.

Parker Quick led off his part of the inning on a grounder to third.

Quick then moved up to second when Burns hit one past the shortstop, putting runners at first and second.

Gavlock brought in Quick as he hit an RBI double center.

But that would be all the Eagles would be able to manage in the inning.

Bald Eagle would tie things in the bottom of the fifth.

Burns doubled into left, putting him in scoring position.

Burns later scored on a wild pitch.

Heverly kept things going on a walk. Tyler Serb followed with a walk of his own.

But the Mounties regrouped and was able to shut down the Eagles and keep them from taking the lead.

Colby Hahn scored in the sixth to take back the lead.

Going into the final stanza, the bar of Whitehead made the difference as he saved the best for last, posting a 2-run blast over the left field fence.

Holding a 5-2 advantage going into the bottom of seventh, the Mounties were able to hold the Eagles to a lone run en route to the 5-3 victory.
