Strong First Quarter Propels Mavericks Past Mounties

Cresson, PA – Visiting Medaille used a strong first quarter to defeat the Mount Aloysius women’s basketball team by a final score of 74-62 on Saturday afternoon in AMCC action.

The Mavericks led 23-11 after one quarter of play. The Mounties responded in the second quarter and cut the deficit to three at 27-24 when Lea Sammarco drained a three-point shot with 2:29 left until the half. However, Medaille went on a quick 7-0 run to close the quarter and took a 34-24 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Mounties were able to trim the Medaille lead to four points on three different occasions, and with 55 seconds left Sammarco hit another shot from behind the arc to cut the lead to 48-44. In the final quarter, Jessa Wright was good on a driving layup with 7:44 remianing to make it a 52-50 game in favor of the visitors. Medaille responded once again and pushed their lead back to double digits, and the Mounties weren’t able to complete the comeback.

Medaille held a large advantage at the free throw line as the visitors shot 32-for-47 while the Mounties shot 12-for-19 on free throw attempts. The Mavericks outrebounded the Mounties 62-37, but Mount Aloysius committed only 11 turnovers while Medaille recorded 21 turnovers.

Wright paced the Mounties with 26 points while adding eight steals and five rebounds. Sammarco was the only other Mountie in double figures with 11 points, and Breana Kendrick registered three steals on the defensive end.

The Mounties fall to 9-14 overall and 7-9 in conference play with two games remaining. The Mounties will host Franciscan on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
