Allison chooses Kutztown as his next destination

By BRIAN CARSON

LEWISTOWN – Mifflin County senior Nic Allison will continue his academic and wrestling career at Kutztown.

A Division II power, the Golden Bears finished the season 10-2 and 5-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Kutztown placed 18th at nationals.

I really enjoyed the campus ever since I first saw it. I got to meet the team and coaches while I was there, and they took me in like I’ve been there forever,” Allison said. “They treated me like one of the guys, and I loved the whole school in general.”

There were other schools he took an interest in, including a couple of Division I schools, but none had the appeal of Kutztown.

“I considered a few schools like Shippensburg, Edinboro, and Appalachian State. However, I didn’t like them as much as Kutztown. I knew it was the right place for me,” Allison said.

Allison has zero concerns about adjusting to the rigors of the collegiate game. He believes his technique is suited for college wrestling.

“I think my style will be interesting going into the college level because I’m not a conventional wrestler,” he said. “I’m a big move guy. However, they aren’t easy moves to hit, especially in college. I feel like I will be able to adapt quickly and make somenoise at the collegiate level.”

Confidence is something not lacking in Allison as he prepares to transition from high school to college. He is well-seasoned, wrestling in big matches since he was a youth.

“I feel I have taken all the steps I can to prepare myself to wrestle at the college level,” he said. “I’ve trained in the off-seasons. I’ve talked to former and current college athletes for guidance on how to prepare myself. I feel it will work out well.”

Redshirting his freshman season is not in the plan right now. The situation is fluid, but as it stands, Allison jumps into the fire at 125 and faces competition from Trent Thompson and Andreo Ferraina.

Thompson was 6-5 last season. Ferraina took a redshirt.

I do not plan on redshirting. It’s still up in the air. The plan is for me to join the team as the starting 125-pounder. If the coaches change their minds, I will consider it,” Allison said.

The season couldn’t start soon enough for Allison. He’s already set reachable goals for the upcoming season.

“I’m excited to wrestle 125 at Kutztown because I’ve always been the lightweight on the wrestling team, and it won’t be different there,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be able to practice with the other guys in the room and hopefully end up going far into the postseason.”

Allison completed his oustanding Husky career with a 123-19 record with 72 falls at 106-113. He is fourth all-time in program history in falls and fifth in victories.

He was a four-time PIAA qualifier, including an eighth-place finish as a sophomore in 2020. Allison is only the fourth four-time District 6 champion in county history, joining Kenny Whitsel, Hayden, and Trent Hidlay. He Won a Northwest regional championship as a freshman and was a runner-up the next three years.
