Archives: State College Soccer Girls Shut out Mifflin County

Centre County’s soccer girls met their Mid-Penn Commonwealth foe in a recent, exciting soccer match.

The injury-riddled Huskies fought valiantly, going toe-to-toe against the Little Lions, trailing at the intermission by just one goal, 3-2.

However, that would be as close as the Huskies would get as State College shut out Mifflin County in the second half and took home the 5-2 victory.

Robin Derr led the way for State College –posting a hat trick in the victory.

Mifflin County goalie, Mackenzie Bressler, made a strong effort, snagging eight shots on goal. State College keeper Caitlyn Fosnacht tallied only two the entire contest.

State College opened the game with possession of the ball and took it down into the Mifflin County back-third. The Little Lions were relentless, hitting five consecutive shots that were stopped by Bressler and the Mifflin County backline.

However at the 28:39 mark of the first half, State College’s Luba Hristova broke away from the pack and put the first goal in.

Minutes later, the Mifflin County offense retaliated in grand fashion as Alyssa Johnson hit Bryce Papp in stride, setting up Papp for the game-tying goal.

Both defenses took control for the next six minutes until the Little Lions would take back the lead.

Derr hit her first goal of the game at the 19:50 mark when teammate Taylor Campbell sailed a pass that came right down in front of Derr. Derr blasted a shot past Bressler, making it 2-1.

Three minutes after her first score, Derr was at it again –blasting an unassisted shot into the corner of the Mifflin County goal, extending the Little Lions’ lead to 3-1. Mifflin County would have the last say in the first half when Taylor Dietrich sailed a smoking shot past Fosnacht, ending the first half scoring at 3-2.

Despite giving up two goals in the second half, the Huskies controlled both the ball and the tempo for more of the second half than the first. Mifflin County’s defense held the State College offense to only nine shots while its offense picked up five.

The Little Lions goals were scored by Derr and Victoria Crawford.

In the end, State College led the game in shots on goal by a 23-9 margin and led in corner opportunities 5-0.
