Bald Eagle plays solid contest, advances to D6 title game

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE –  The search for the crown continues.

Thursday, the Bald Eagle softball team continued its quest for championship gold as they battled worthy foe Marion Center that came into the contest at 16-4.

Bald Eagle gave the ball to ace hurler Sierra Albright. The Stingers brought their ace Cheyenne Silvis to do battle.

In the end, it was the Eagles that would prevail winning 4-0 in a 2-hit shut out by Albright.

Picking up some timely hits were Ava Stere and Alyssa King, both doing 2-for-3. King’s double early on set up the Eagles offense for some timely runs.

“We had some timely clutch hitting. You can’t say enough about Alyssa King. She has just been solid all year,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Don Lucas. “She’s a catcher by trade but we asked her to play third base and does a great job for us. She’s got some big hits for us this year but nothing as big as tonight.”

Early on, Marion Center threatened in the first inning.

Lydia Miller led off with a single into center.

Alexis Roush followed with a gapper into the gap in right field, putting runners on second and third.

With two out, Bald Eagle intentionally walked Cheyenne Silvis, loading the bases.

However, Albright struck out the next batter, leaving the scoreboard unscathed.

Albright continued to roll as she tallied six strike outs in the first two inning.

In the bottom of the second, Ava Stere started things off, posting the Lady Eagles first hit of the young contest. She moved up to scoring position on a wild pitch. Shae Housel joined Stere on base via another fielders choice from Rachel Bryan.

Alyssa King bounced into a fielders choice moving Stere to third.

Stere scored on another error by Marion Center.

Bald Eagle’s defense shut down the Stingers in the top of the third.

Albright dominated from the circle in the third, striking out the heart of the Stingers line up.

Leading off the fourth for the Eagles was Stere. Stere took a Silvis offering up the middle for her second hit.

Housel followed with a hit of her own past third, putting runners on first and second.

Alyssa King scored Stere as she blasted a shot in the right field gap, upping the lead to 2-0. Bryan again hit an RBI fielders choice, scoring Housel and moving King to third.

King was replaced on the base path by Addison Burns.

Kendra Uberti bounced into an RBI fielders choice, increase it to a 4-0.

With two out, Habovick singled to end the run.

Marion Center put some pressure on Bald Eagle in the sixth, posting runners on second and third. But the Bald Eagle defense was up for the challenge as they stranded the Stingers on base.

It will be a Mountain League match up as Bald Eagle will battle Penns Valley for the D6 title Thursday at Saint Francis University.
