Carson: Centre County crowns seven champs; advances 30

ALTOONA—Centre County crowned seven champions and advanced 30 wrestlers to regionals at the District 6 Class AAA/AA championships on Saturday.

State College crowned four champs in Class 3A–James Whitbred (133), Pierson Manville (145), Asher Cunningham (160), and Nick Pavlechko (285). Bald Eagle Area brought home three gold medals in Class 2A, with Tanner Guenot (107), Caden Judice (114), and Caleb Close (189) claiming titles.

Manville won his fourth district crown and remained unbeaten on the season with a default victory over returning PIAA champion Luke Simcox of Central Mountain. The Little Lion senior, a PIAA champion in 2022, pinned Mifflin County’s Colby Seiler in 1:09 of their semifinal bout.

Cunningham won his third district title in impressive fashion, scoring a 23-8 technical fall at the 5:27 mark. The Little Lion junior had 11 takedowns ​in the victory. Cunningham reached the finals with a pin in 1:08 over Hollidaysburg’s Aiden Schenck.

The third of State College’s three hammers, Nick Pavlechko won title number three with a fall in 56 seconds over Wyatt Maines of Hollidaysburg in the finals. The senior recorded a 47–second pin in the semifinals over Altoona’s Hayden Speece.

Whitbred, just a freshman, beat Mifflin County’s Kamden Everly 5-1 in the finals. The difference being takedowns in the first and second periods. Whitbred made it to the finals with a 17-1 tech fall over Central Mountain’s Jagger Pardoe.

Others advancing for the Little Lions were Noah Young (2nd at 107), Jacob Campbell (2nd at 139), and Jonathan Coates (3rd at 121).

Young took out second seed Andrew Alexander of Mifflin County 4-2 in the semis before losing by fall in the finals to Central Mountain’s Gavin Heverly. The time of the pin was at the 5:42 mark.

After a 13-2 semifinal victory over Altoona’s Wyatt Long, Campbell ran smack into former PIAA champion Dalton Perry of Central Mountain. The Wildcat junior built a 14-6 lead before stacking Campbell at the 2:14 mark.

Coates advanced with a 5-2 decision over Logan Krupka of Hollidaysburg for third. He defeated Altoona’s Tabor Baker 8-0 in the consolation semifinals.

Falling in the third-place match (the blood round) were Jon Whitbred (114), Nicholas Berrena (127), Brady Bucher (152), and Reagan Dillon (189). Xavier Zeruth (172) and Lucas Anderson finished fifth.

State College finished third in the team race with 195 points. Central Mountain won the team race with 206.5 points, followed by Mifflin County (199.5).

The Northwest Regional Championships begin Friday back in Altoona at 4:30 p.m.

Class AA

The Eagles soared at districts with three champions, seven regional qualifiers, and a second-place team finish.

The 1-2 punch of freshman Tanner Guenot (107) and sophomore Caden Judice (114) captured back-to-back championships.

Guenot defeated Philipsburg-Osceola’s Caleb Hummel 4-1 in the final, thanks to a takedown in the first and a reversal in the second. Judice, a Louisiana state runner-up as a freshman, defeated Marion Center’s Griffin Tinsman 6-2 for his first district crown.

Close, ranked second in the state at 189, got some revenge on number one Andrew McMonagle of Huntingdon with a 5-2 victory in the finals for his second district title. The Eagle junior built a 5-0 lead with an escape and takedown in the second and two nearfall points in the third. McMonagle defeated Close 6-3 back in January at the Laurel Highlands Championship.

Also earning a trip to the Southwest Regional for BEA wereLucas Fye (3rd at 127), Mason Reese (3rd at 145), Dawson Lomison (4th at 133), and Gavin Bennett (6th at 152).

Fye pinned Huntingdon’s Chris Gibson in 21 seconds for third, while Reese pinned Penns Valley’s Brayden Lisowski in 2:02 for his bronze medal.

Cameron Dubbs took eighth at 172, just short of earning a regional berth.

The Rams didn’t crown a champion, but they advanced nine out of districts. Colten Shunk and Ty Watson led the way with thirdsat 133 and 152, respectively. Shunk lost by a 23-9 major decision in the finals to Penn State–bound Mason Gibson of Bishop McCort. Watson pinned United’s Caden McCully in 2:42.

Other placers for Penns Valley include Conner Myers (6th at 107), Erik Carlile (5th at 114), Jack Darlington (4th at 121), Tripp Watson (5th at 127), Lisowski (4th at 145),

Zach Rummel lost in the blood round at 172 and placed seventh.

The Red Raiders advanced four, with Noah Weaver getting second at 145, Wyatt Long (107) and Ezra Swisher (139) finished third, and Cameron Garcia was sixth at 127.

Weaver dropped a 13-4 major decision to Jackson Butler of Bishop McCort. Long pinned Westmont-Hilltop’s Owen Dluhos in 1:19, and Swisher defeated Huntingdon’s Eric Mykut by a 9-1 major decision.

Also making the podium for Bellefonte were Jackson Long (7that 152), Jack McHail (7th at 160), and Luke Hockenberry (8th at 189).

The Mounties qualified three to regionals, with Hummel and Marcus Gable (139) finishing third and Nate Fleck taking a fifth at 145.

Gable had the misfortune of facing Bishop McCort’s Bo Bassett in the finals, where he lost by a 20-5 technical fall in 4:12. Bassett, ranked first in the state and the country, had seven takedowns and six nearfall points.

Averi Gable (8th at 107) and Ace Foster (7th at 121) placed for P-O.

Bishop McCort ran away with the team title, crowning seven champions and 283 points. BEA finished second with 195.5, Penns Valley was third with 170.5, Bellefonte took sixth with 127.5, and the Mounties were seventh with 116.5 points.

The Southwest Class AA Regionals begin on Friday, March 3.
