Carson: Preview of the District 6 Class AAA wrestling tournament

ALTOONA – The wrestling tournament trail gets underway Saturday at the District 6 Class 3A championships in Altoona.
Action kicks off with quarterfinals beginning at 10:30 a.m. The top four in each weight class advance to the Northwest Regionals, also in Altoona, March 4-5.
Mifflin County leads the way for our local teams, with 11 wrestlers seeded in the top four of their respective weight classes.
Nic Allison (113), Kyler Everly (160), Trey Shoemaker (189), and Jaxson Pupo (285) received top seeds. Parker Kearns (152) and Anson Wagner (215) have second seeds, while third seeds went to Hunter Johnson (120), Blake Aumiller (132), and Deakon Schaeffer (145). Jacob Cunningham (138) and freshmanAvery Aurand are fourth seeds.
Allison will try to become the fifth wrestler in county history to capture four district titles – joining Ken Whitsel, the Hidlay brothers, Hayden and Trent, and Trey Kibe. He enters the tournament with a 118-16 career record with 68 falls.
Everly looks to become a two-time champion and a three-time finalist. The Husky senior won it in 2020 and came in second last year.
Returning district champion Casey Smith earned the top seed at 120 for Juniata. Twin brother and 2021 regional qualifier Taylor Smith is the second seed at 126, as is freshman Joey Bomberger at 106. Older brother Josh Bomberger is seeded third at 160, while Amelia Smith (113), Daniel Painter (132), Jonathan Kauffman (215), and Jordan Cruz (285) earned fourth seeds.
Bellefonte‘s Jude Swisher, a two-time state placer, is the top seed at 145. The Penn recruit is 33-1 on the season, 129-18 for his career, and ranked first in the state. The Red Raider senior is a returning district champion and a three-time district finalist.
Earning second seeds for Bellefonte is Garrett Choates (113) and Aidan O‘Shea (132). The third seeds went to Cameron Garcia (106), Noah Weaver (126), Gage Long (138), Addison Shawley (215), and Tyler Putnam (285). At 152, Nate Smith is the fourth seed. Choates and O‘Shea were district runner-ups a year ago.
Injury depleted State College has two number one seeds in Pierson Manville (138) and Nicholas Pavlechko (215), ranked number one by PA Power Wrestling. Manville is a returning district champ.
Freshman Asher Cunningham (120), Braden Newby (172), and Carter Weaverling (189) are number two seeds. Jacob Campbell is the fourth seed at 126. The Little Lions are without the services of Hayden Cunningham and Eric Weaver because ofinjury.
Mifflin County and Central Mountain are the frontrunners for the team title. The Huskies defeated the Wildcats in the regular season (48-21) and in the finals of the District 6 Duals (42-24).
With only four entrant at 152, Kearns and Nate Smith are guaranteed to advance to the Northwest Regionals.
