Celtics land last second victory in U10 action

UNIVERSITY PARK –  Local soccer starts off with a bang!

Saturday morning on August 2nd at Penn State University’s Intramural soccer fields, the PSU 8×8 soccer tournament started off with a rivalry game in its very first game in U10 action when two Centre County teams played for bragging rights.

The local Celtics soccer team went head-to-head against Penn United in boys action.

Recently the State College Celtics Soccer team won the National Indoor Championship held in Cleveland Ohio. They also won a Championship held in TeaNeck NJ.

Both teams mirrored each other in play and the two played all but a few seconds tied at zero.

However, with less than 10 ticks left on the clock the Celtics’  Joel Torbic sent a blast over the head of the Penn United’s goalie, hitting nothing but net. With the goal, Torbic and his teammates came out in a hard fought victor over its fellow Centre County opponent.

In the first half, the Celtics took the first momentum of the game, pushing down into the Penn United back third but the momentum would not last very long as the two would turning into a fast moving back and forth affair with each team having their chances at the opposing goals numerous times.

Goalie play on both sides were phenomenal as each stopped numerous fast break chances by their opposition.

When the first half whistle sounded, the teams went into the intermission, scoreless. The Celtics led the way in shots on goal by a slim 5-4 advantage and also led on corner opportunities 4-1.

Penn United’s goalkeeper led in saves by a 3-2 margin.

When the second half got underway, the competition got even tougher despite the Celtics getting more shooting opportunities.

Both teams led off the second half with their first shots coming off corner attempts.

The intensity was mounting as each minute ticked off the clock.

You could cut the anticipation with a knife.

Torbic’s shot from close to midfield sent his teammates home with the victory sailing it to the top of the goal, ending a very exciting contest.

But as both teams left the field as winners after the effort both left on the field.
