Clash of the Titans! Burnham outlasts McVeytown

By Joshua Yoder
MCVEYTOWN – Both teams gave it everything they had and it only came down to one simple score which was made by the Burnham Bulldogs who defeated the McVeytown Eagles by the final score of 7-0 in Peewee football action Sunday afternoon.

The opening quarter of the game was a strong indicator for what the game was all about and that was tough, physical defense.
Although there were moment where both respective offenses managed to get a few quick bursts of offense. The defenses stepped up in a big way and completely stalled their opponents’ offense.
There were a few more bright spots during the second quarter of the match where both teams were able to showcase some offense.
For the Bulldogs they switched a quick snap, short passing attack and were able to move the ball down the field. However, the Eagles came back strong defensively and refused to allow any points.
But then McVeytown took its turn offensively and switched up their offense as well late in the period and went with an all air out assault, attacking with the deep ball. The change seemed to be working for the Eagles, however, they just were not able to beat the clock and score as time had ran out with both teams being scoreless at halftime.
Burnham then came out the gates swinging on offense at the start of the third quarter as the Bulldogs marched down the field and made it into the redzone in one of the few times of the game.
However, the Bulldogs lost all the momentum as a fumble occurred in the redzone and McVeytown was able to recover the fumble ending the Bulldogs’ chances of scoring.
Then it went into the fourth quarter and for most of the period, neither team managed to get any momentum going offensively as both team remained at a stalemate.
But like the old saying goes, it only takes one. And that one moment came late in the quarter as Burnham got onto the back of Titan Cherry who powered his team downfield. McVeytown started to struggle a bit defensively and committed some penalties which guided the Bulldogs into the redzone.
It was there that Cherry punched in a four yard touchdown run to get the first and only score of the game. Then Dayton Tipton completed the extra point.
The Eagles continued to battle as hard as they could and found themselves with two minutes to play and good field position after a kick return.
But a fumble occurred on the first play of their possession and was recovered by Burnham who then ran out the clock to complete the win.
The Bulldogs also won in the Mighty Nots game by the final score of 6-2.
Burnham will be on the road again next Sunday as the Bulldogs will play the Derry-Decatur Cyclones. While McVeytown will look to rebound next Sunday as they will host their final home game of the season as the Eagles will welcome the Juniata Indians.
