Day 2: MC swimmers conclude season

UNIVERSITY PARK -The Mifflin County swimming team’s season officially came to an end Saturday at the McCoy Natatorium on the Penn State campus when the second day of the District 6 Class AA/ AAA concluded.

Though the team was unsuccessful on advancing a swimmer to the PIAA State Championships- the team had numerous top 10 finishes in the final day. There was numerous dropped times and strong finishes on the final day of competition.

Sporting a young team, the finish was something that will be something that will pay off for next season according to Mifflin County coach Amy Houtz.

“Its not showing in the places necessarily but our kids are dropping their times,” Houtz said. “At the end of the season that’s where you want to be and want to see. They are right. This was really a fun meet and we were really excited about the results.”

Evan Becker led off the second day of competition as he swam in the 100-yard freestyle. His time of 51.32 was enough to put the junior on the podium for a medal.

Teammate Zack Bonson did well in his first showing of the day-posting a sixth place time of 5:08.24 in the exhausting 500-yard freestyle.

Mifflin County produced two place winners in the 100-yard breast stroke when Drew Kline and Brenden Durst finished with a 9th-place and 11th-place finish with times of 1:13.21 and 1:17.02, respectively.

Rounding out the boys afternoon was the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team consisting of Shane Sennett, Kline, Bonson and Becker placed fifth with a time of 3:44.57.

On the girls side, Ali McCurdy and teammate Jenna Kile got their team off and running in the right direction, posting an 8th place and 10th finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

Coming in 8th place, McCurdy finished in eighth place with a time of 6:14.29. Kile wasn’t to far behind her with her 10th place finish of 6:26.92.

In the girls final event or the day, the Huskies went out and left everything they had in the pool, posting a final time of 4:20.54 which placed them on the podium as well with a fourth place finish.
