East Juniata falls to Selinsgrove

Selinsgrove 66, East Juniata 49

COCOLAMUS – A combination of the three point shot and a full court press was a difficult challenge for East Juniata to overcome as the Tigers fell to the Selinsgrove Seals by the final score of 66-49 in a non-league boys basketball game Wednesday evening.

The Seals were raining down the shots from deep as they combined for 12 three pointers throughout the game.

In fact, over 50 percent of the points scored by Selinsgrove, came from beyond the arc. But in fairness to the East Juniata defense, the Tigers were not letting the Seals get easy looks from the three point line.

It all began in the first quarter of the game, where East Juniata started off the game strong with a 5-0 run which forced Selinsgrove to call a timeout.

But then after the timeout, the Seals switched up their defense and went with a full-court press and attacked the Tigers and got them out of their rhythm.

The three ball came into play not long after that with Selinsgrove connecting with four shots from beyond the arc. Isiah Ulrich, Ryan Reich and Nate Hackenberger all had the shots made from deep. Including a full court bomb at the buzzer to give the Seals a 18-12 lead after one quarter of play.

The full-court press and three ball continued to be a major factor for Selinsgrove during the second quarter. The Seals continued to create problems for East Juniata and at one point in the period managed to get a double digit lead.

But as the frame was drawing to a close, Tanner Barth led a late effort to carry the Tigers and cut down the Selinsgrove lead back down to single digits with a 30-22 Seals lead going into the break.

However, the third quarter was a repeat of the first quarter in terms of shooting the three ball as much like the first quarter, Selinsgrove dropped four three pointers in the period and Ulrich went off dropping three of those four shots from deep.

But despite the deficit, the Tigers continued to fight to the very end as they pressured the Seals and any run that Selinsgrove made, East Juniata answered with a run of its own making coach Hazel proud and excited for the playoffs.
Barth and Brackbill led the charge in the frame with scoring a combined 10 of the 18 total points scored for the quarter.

Barth led the Tigers with a game high of 19 points for the evening. Brackbill added another 12 points for the game.

For the Seals, they were led by Ulrich who scored all 18 points exclusively from the three point line. Reich had 15 points while Spencer George had another 12.

The Tigers also lost in the JV game 48-45 with Brady Roe leading with a team high of 13 points while Clark Ritzman added another 12 for the night.

With the loss, East Juniata is now (15-6) overall and will be the fourth seed heading into the District 4 Class 2A playoffs and will host Northwest Area with the time and date to be determined.
