Flashback: SC boys captures D6 title
TYRONE – What a night for the State College boys basketball team and its fans.
After already notching a Mid-Penn championship, it was a chance for the Little Lions to capture a District 6 Class 6A title when they faced arch rival Altoona in the night cap of a State College/ Altoona boys and girls D6 double header at the Tyrone high school.
Ryan McNulty led the way with 13 points while Tommy Sekunda followed with 11.
After find themselves trailing by one at 21-20 after one, State College started to make its move as the second quarter got under way.
The result was an early 7-0 run, thanks to a triple by Tommy Freiburg and three points by McNulty, making it 27-21.
The two teams exchanged baskets in the next six possessions as the Little Lions were still in charge 32-24.
By the end of the first half, State College was just 16 minutes away from another title.
In the third quarter, Altoona was not able to pick up any ground as State College outscored Altoona 14-12 and went into the final stanza leading 54-41.
State College put the game away early in the fourth quarter as its defense made a statement by keeping the Altoona off the scoreboard while its offense went on a 17-0 run, putting the game out of reach at 71-31.
Though Altoona refused to go away and scored 16 points after being shut down early.
However, it was medals for all the State College players as they moved onto PIAA competition with the 73-47 victory.
