Spring Mills – Penns Valley opened its Tournament in strong fashion as it took it to the Bellefonte girls late in the contest to defeat the Red Raiders 55-22 at the Penns Valley gym Monday night.
Mara Dreibelbis led the Red Raiders in the scoring department, shooting for seven points, two of which came from beyond the arc, while teammate Jess Book had four.
Penns Valley was led by Maci Ligen who finished with a game high 14 points in a winning effort.
Also picking up double-digit scoring was Mackenzie Ironside. Ironside finished just two points behind Ligen, tallying 12.
“Hopefully we remember how we played defense in that first half,” Bellefonte coach Adam Gearhart said. “Our defensive effort in the first half, I said to them at halftime they should have 23 points. We played our butts defensively but we couldn’t make a shot at the hoop. I don’t know what our shot chart looked like but misses at the hoop and that just killed us.”
In the first quarter, Penns Valley up tempo game was stymied as the Rams were held to just 11 points in the quarter.
However, the Penns Valley defense was also tough, allowing just three.
Bellefonte’s only score came on a Dreibelbis triple.
Bellefonte’s defense continued to thwart any big scores in the second as well.
It’s defensive attack made it hard for the Rams a second chance shot at the basket.
But again, the Rams also held the Red Raider offense at bay, going into the intermission leading 23-7.
Things fell apart for the Red raider girls I the second half as they were out scored 32-15.
“Penns Valley is a good team and they are very sharp. Karen is an excellent coach and she get from her team,” Gearhart said. “We need to look at that and we need to be disciplined too. We need to be running our plays and we need to be boxing out and with the defensive effort we gave tonight we can turn this season around for us.
