COCOLAMUS – Juniata got behind the hot shooting of Regan Lowrey and tough defense to take down its rival East Juniata by the final score of 53-18 in Tri-Valley League girls basketball action Friday night.
For the majority of the opening period, neither team really was able to get their respective offenses going.
That was until Lowrey started going off late in the period dropping shot after shot to pull the Indians ahead to a 15-4 lead after one. In fact, Lowrey scored eight of those 15 points.
But Juniata came through in a much bigger way during the second quarter as the defense really clamped down on Sara Brackbill of East Juniata as the Indians refused to allow the Tigers to get the ball down into the paint to her. Every time they tried to move the ball inside, Juniata immediately jumped on it and nabbed the steal.
One of the reasons why Juniata had the ability to close down the paint was Brackbill’s partner in crime down low Landyn Cramer found herself in foul trouble with three fouls which forced her to sit on the bench for the rest of the half.
The fastbreak was also a major weapon for the Indians to use as they scored a lot of their points on the run. The three ball was big for Juniata as well with the duo of Lowrey and Grace Reinhold leading the charge. Mariska Beward scored all eight of her points in the first half.
Lowrey herself had outscored the Tigers with a game high of 20 points. Reinhold and Haley Mummah also were in double digits for the game with Reinhold dropping 12 points while Mummah added another 11.
The Tigers were led by Cramer who had eight points.
Juniata also won in the JV game with the Indians coming out victorious by the score of 26-7.
Juniata moves to (13-8) overall and (7-5) in the TVL and will travel to face Newport on Monday. East Juniata will look to rebound on Monday as the Tigers will host the Greenwood Wildcats.
