MIDDLEBURG – Defensive toughness and nearly having every single player score a point carried the Juniata Indians over the Midd-West Mustangs 60-20 in girls basketball action Saturday evening.

The Indians put constant pressure on the Mustangs defensively in the opening period where they created numerous turnovers and turned those turnovers into buckets.

Juniata also was crashing the boards in the first quarter and got itself plenty of second chance opportunities.

Midd-West struggled to contain them and found itself having foul trouble in the frame. In fact, the Mustangs had more fouls in the first period than points as they committed six fouls and only scored four points.

There was a storm brewing during the second quarter and the name was Mackenzie Bennett. Bennett led the charge for Juniata in the period scoring nine of the 13 total points scored in the frame.

The Juniata defense continued to be a problem for the Mustangs as they were only able to produce a total of three points in the quarter giving the Indians a 30-7 lead.

The offense really opened up in the third quarter for Juniata as the Indians found contributions from five different players who scored at least a basket in the frame.

The Juniata defense did not allow a single Midd-West play to score in double digits.

Bennett led the Indians with a game high of 28 points while Ava Shearer added another 12 points for the game.

Juniata (12-6) hosts the Greenwood Wildcats on Tuesday.
