Lady Huskies fall to Gettysburg in OT contest

LEWISTOWN – Regulation wasn’t enough for both Gettysburg and Mifflin County as both teams were looking to become the champion of the 2021 Alicia Bray Memorial girls basketball tournament. And despite three big buzzer beaters, the Huskies fell just short losing to Gettysburg by the final score of 50-44.

Mifflin County struggled to get their shots to fall throughout the opening quarter of the game. Gettysburg was able to get a basket from four different players. However, the score could have been much worse for Mifflin County if not for the tough physical play of their defense which forced Gettysburg into committing turnovers.

Also Bri Bodtorf made her presence felt in the quarter as she scored five of the team’s nine points in the frame to make it 9-9 after one quarter of play.

Bodtorf would strike again in the second quarter of the game as both teams were displaying a very fast, up tempo style of basketball. But neither team was able to get into the rhythm of getting the shots to fall. Kate Knable put the Huskies ahead with a putback to make it 16-14.

However, the Warriors were able to take the lead adding three more points to make it 17-16. Then as the clock was winding down, Bodtorf fired a three ball that connected right as the buzzer went off to give Mifflin County a 19-17 lead at halftime.

Marissa Gingrich then came out in the third quarter and put on a show as she refused to allow her team to fall behind and scored 11 of the 16 points scored by Mifflin County in the quarter. But Gingrich saved her best for last as time had expired. She managed to get a shot off that got in through the basket. This buzzer beater gave the Huskies their second buzzer beater of the game.

It would not be there last, as Mifflin County would fall behind in the fourth quarter but managed to hang around. Then with 12 seconds left to play in regulation, the Huskies were down 42-39 and had possession of the ball.

Gingrich had the ball at half-court and quickly drew the pressure from Gettysburg. That left the door wide open for Kate Knable who stood at the corner and received that pass from Gingrich and came up with a clutch shot from beyond the arc to tie the game at 42 and turned the crowd into a frenzy.

But the Warriors were able to close the game out in OT as they played the waiting game, and ran down the clock as much as possible before attacking the basket and scoring. The Gettysburg defense also played aggressive, only allowing the Huskies to make a basket in the frame. Which was made by Gingrich.

Marissa Gingrich had 15 points and 10 rebounds which gives her a double-double for the night. But she was not the only Mifflin County to achieve a double-double as Bri Bodtorf also had 10 rebounds and added another 12 points.

Both Mifflin County players were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mifflin County is now (1-1) and will play at Red Land on Tuesday.
