Lady Lions Earn Top Seed at B1G Tourney

 

Penn State will open the tournament against either Ohio State or Northwestern on Friday at noon in Indianapolis

 

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; March 2, 2014 – The #12/8 Penn State Lady Lions (22-6, 13-3 Big Ten) earned the top seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis for the third consecutive season. The Lady Lions shared the regular-season title with Michigan State, but earned the top seed thanks to a 66-54 win over the Spartans in the only regular-season meeting on Jan. 19.

 

The Lady Lions will open play against the winner of the first round match-up between #8 seed Ohio State and #9 seed Northwestern, which will take place on Thursday at noon. Penn State’s quarterfinal contest will be played at noon on Friday and will air live on the Big Ten Network.

 

Penn State swept the regular-season series with both the Buckeyes and Wildcats. The Lady Lions earned a 66-42 win at home against OSU on Jan. 16 and claimed a 74-54 win in Columbus on Feb. 9. Penn State topped Northwestern in Evanston, 79-75, on Feb. 2 and won at home, 82-73, on Feb. 20.

 

The Lady Lions are 25-17 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament and claimed the first two tourney crowns in 1995 and 1996. Last season, Penn State topped #9 seed Ohio State, before falling to #4 seed Michigan State in the semifinals. Penn State is 13-3 all-time in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Lady Lions are 5-6 in the Big Ten Tournament under Coquese Washington, but have won at least one game each of the last four years. PSU is also 3-1 in quarterfinal games under Washington.

 

It is the seventh time in program history that the Lady Lions are the top seed (1995, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2012,2013, 2014). The Lady Lions are 10-5 when they are the #1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
