MC opens season with win over Central Mountain

LOCK HAVEN – Thunderstruck!!

Despite having to have their season opener and coaching debut of Coach Shane Breon delayed by a thunder and lightning storm, the MIfflin County Huskies came out striking on offense and defense to chalk up two early first half scores to notch the 14-7 victory.

“They came out and actually surprised me a little bit. We were able to run the ball on these guys and I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to,” said Breon. “The guys up front did a real nice job upfront in the first half. Defense locked things down like I knew they would.”

In the process, it gave Breon his first win at the helm of his new group.

Mifflin County got an inspired effort by its defense, allowing only 86 yards of total offense for Central Mountain.

Deakon Sheaffer and his strong effort by his line were able to put the Wildcats back on their heels early and often, allowing him to rush for 118 yards in the first half.

After allowing 118 first half rushing yards to MIfflin County running back Deakon Sheaffer, the Wildcats held him to only eight in the second half.

In the opening quarter, MIfflin County out firing on all cylinders as the gave the ball to Sheaffer, who misled his way through the line of scrimmage for a touchdown 6-yard touchdown jaunt with 3:25 left in the first. It finished as a 11-play drive.

Sheaffer, who rushed for 118 yards in the first half alone, got behind his big men on the line and took a second one later in the second half.

Sheaffer would run another touch down late in the contest, this time a 7-yard touchdown with 5:08 left in the half.

Myers finished his day with a 8-24 night through the air with 50-yards to show for it.

It was quarterback by committee for MIfflin County as Logan Parks went 3-9 for 18 yards and Landon Eichhorn who went 3-4 for 26.

Eichhorn came off the bench and hit three passes in consecutive throws.

However, big plays from Dupree and Isaac Wilson proved pivotal for the Huskies offense as the amassed a total of 157 yards rushing and 44 through the air.

In the third quarter trailing 14-0, the Central Mountain defense helped put its team in the game, forcing MIfflin County to fumble deep in their own end.

Mifflin County was pinned down at the 10, they got the ball to Issac Wilson around the end, he fumbled while being tackled. As the ball got lose, Brady Myers fell on the ball to give his team the ball at the 14.

The Huskies were able to stop the drive on the first three plays, forcing the Wildcats to gamble on a 4th and 7.

But Central Mountain was up for the challenge as Myers hooked up with Connor Foltz on an 11-yard touchdown in the back of the left side of the end zone. With the successful extra point by Peyton Jones, the Wildcats cut the lead in half with 2:16 left in the third.

However, both defenses took over from there as yardage was hard to come by.

However, it would be the MIfflin County defense that would make the key plays as the game wound down to preserve the lead and the victory.

After pinning Central Mountain back deep in their end, the Huskies would force Central Mountain to a fourth down once again with 2:00 left in the final stanza.

Myers set up a screen pass on a 4th and 10, connecting with Sarafini. He was able to get only eight of the 10 he needed as Parker Kearns hit him backward, giving the ball to the Huskies to run the clock down and gave MIfflin County the victory.

Next up from MIfflin County is a home game against Shikellamy.

“We’re hoping to get a big crowd out there. The kids are fired up. Hopefully we can a win next week so we can go into Altoona 2-0,” said Breon.
