Mount Union Mistakes leads to a Husky Win!

MOUNT UNION – Mifflin County and Mount Union had found themselves in a middle of a pitchers’ duel where it was going to come down to who made the fewer mistakes. And ultimately it was the Huskies would come out on top over the Trojans with the final score of 5-3 in high school baseball action Friday.
The game came down to errors and who’d take advantage of them and that’s where Mifflin County took control of the game as the Trojans committed four errors in the game.
The Huskies got on the board first in the top of the second inning where they had runners on the corners with two outs and Grady Hoppel at the plate. Hoppel fell behind the count 0-2 before sending the ball the opposite way into right field that scored Jayden Smith to give Mifflin County a 1-0 lead.
Then the follow inning was when the Mount Union defense began to struggling committing two of its four errors in the frame. It started with an error at short that allowed Ryan Kanagy to reach base before back to back singles by Landen Eichhorn and Xavier Smith to bring him home.
After a Jayden Smith double play, Madden Weaver stepped up in a big way and drove in Eichhorn with an Infield single to extend the lead to 3-0. Weaver later scored on another Mount Union mistake which was a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
The Trojans’ defense committed two more errors in the top half of the fourth inning which allowed Farrell Souders to reach base before scoring thanks to Eichhorn who grounded out to short for the RBI.
But Mount Union wasn’t going away quietly as in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Trojans were able to score all three of their runs in the frame. Bryce Danish ended the shut out with a double to left center bringing in both Nasir Collins and Dylan Shawver to cut the lead down to 5-2. Danish later scored on a fielder’s choice by Wyatt Chrisemer to make it 5-3.
Doug Weaver was big on the mound for the Huskies going all seven innings for them. Weaver pitched a one, two, three inning through his first four innings and five of his seven total innings. Weaver collected six strikeouts and had two walks.
On the flip side, Davin Yocum also went the distance for Mount Union and had three strikeouts and two walks.
With this win, Mifflin County has won four in a row and is now (7-4) and will host a double header with Chambersburg on Tuesday with game one starting at 3 p.m.
Meanwhile Mount Union falls to (10-4) and will look to rebound on Monday as the Trojans will host the Penns Valley Rams with start time at 4:30 p.m.
