PSU Lady Lions hold annual Pink Zone

UNIVERSITY PARK – Struggling through a tough 2014-15 schedule, the Lady Lions met up with another team struggling in the ranks of the Big 10 as well in Wisconsin.

Celebrating its annual Pink Zone and Senior day festivities, PSU was looking to send both the fans and senior players Tori Waldner and Molly Dincher away with a victory in its last regular season home game of the year.

Before tip off Waldner and Dincher were honored before the contest between the Lady Lions/ Wisconsin Pink Zone festivities, kicking off the special day.

In the end, the Badgers would play the spoilers in the game on the 3-point shooting of Nicole Bauman who finished with 22 on the afternoon, taking home a 62-56 victory.

Early on in the contest, the Badgers had its 3-point game going, posting threes by Nicole Bauman. Bauman hit her first two triples she shot en route to helping her team an early 9-4 advantage.

Waldner did her best to keep her team in it early posting four shots from the inside.

Penn State retaliated the early run by having one of its own, cutting the Wisconsin advantage to four points with 9:11 left in the opening half.

But the triples by the Badgers were hurting the Lady Lions as Bauman tallied 14 points, four of which came from beyond the arc.

Teammate Tessa Cincy followed up with double-digit scoring in the opening period, posting 10.

Despite leading for much of the first half, the Lady Lions made a last minute scoring drive, scoring a 6-0 run, ending the quarter trailing 36-26.

At the intermission, a member of the legendary 70’s group, Kathy Sledge, Sister Sledge sang their famous hit “We are family” in front of 730 cancer survivors and their families, celebrating the fight and struggles the 730 survivors had overcame.

The beginning of the second half belonged to the Lady Lions, opening the intermission by going on a 10-2 run.

A triple by Jenny DeGraff, cut the Lady Lions deficit to one at 38-37 with 14 minutes left, adding onto the scoring run.

However, the Badgers had an answer to the run getting consecutive buckets by Dakota Whyte and a triple by Bauman to up the Wisconsin lead to 43-37 with 13:45 left.

Penn State battled right back on the shoulders of Sierra Moore, netted six consecutive points to bring the Lady Lions to within three with less than 10 minutes left.

After holding the Badgers on the following possession, Penn State got the ball into the hands of Waldner and she did not disappoint, tying the game at 45.

However, Bauman got back into the scene, posting a triple and helping to extend the Wisconsin lead out to eight with 5:11 left.

Waldner helped cut into the lead minutes later, posting her 10th and 12th point, making it a 53-49 ballgame.

Moore also tallied over double-digits in the contest, finishing with 17. Bauman led all shooters with a game high 22-point effort while Cichy tallied 19.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 6-23.
