Red Raiders open with 10- blanking of PV

BELLEFONTE – The Fred Caldwell era was brought in with style Friday night when the Bellefonte softball team opened the season a convincing 10-0 six-inning victory over visiting Penns Valley at O’Leary Field.

Red Raider hurler Tara Baney led the home team on the mound, posting a 1-hit, 6-strike out shut out. Penns Valley had two runners thrown out at second base.

Menna and Alexis Wetzler went 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively on the day leading the offensive charge.

Leading hitters for Bellefonte were Sara Menna, who was had 3 hits with 3 runs scored and Jenna Ault. who also had 3 hits with 4 RBIs and a sacrifice.

After sending the Penns Valley batters down in order the Lady Raiders went right to work offensively.

With one out, Wetzler hustled out an infield hit. She reached second on the play when the ball sailed over the first baseman’s head.

She moved to third on a fielders’ choice by Elizabeth Lynn.

With two out, Menna came up clutch for Bellefonte, posting an RBI single, ending the tie and moving Lynn to third.

Menna moved up to second on a passed ball. Ault roped a single of her own plating Menna and Lynn, upping the score to 3-0.

Ault rounded out the scoring when she scored on a Rams’ miscue.

Baney cruised through the second and third innings allowing one base runner.

In the third it would be the Red Raiders that would get its offense going once again.

Menna started off the inning with a innocent single and moved to second via a sacrifice by Ault. Anglea Capparelle kept the inning going, posting a single of her own, putting runners on first and third with one out.

Jessica Fishburn added to the Bellefonte lead, posting a 2-RBI single upping the lead to 6-0. After a Rachel Bernier single to centerfield, Wetzler poked a 2-RBI single, upping the Red Raider lead to 8-0.

Finally, Bellefonte ended the contest in the bottom of the sixth, as they posted two runs to end the contest via the 10-run rule. With the win, the Red Raiders improved to 1-0.
