Bounds, Koch earn major decision wins

The Shippensburg University wrestling team dropped a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual meet Tuesday to the East Stroudsburg Warriors on the road, 41-8.

The Raiders (1-14, 0-5 PSAC) got major decision victories from freshman Eli Bounds (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) and sophomore Owen Koch (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) at 141 and 184 pounds.

Bounds dominated ESU junior Carlen Lapaix, scoring the initial takedown inside the first 10 seconds of the match, and adding two more scores to pick up his first conference and dual meet win.

Koch took down his opponent Jarrett Pantuso three times, including twice in the first period, and tacked on a riding time point to earn a 15-3 win.

Freshman Diesel Koser (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) also had an impressive performance, nearly knocking off 18 match-winner Tjay Hiller in the match of the night at 197 pounds.

Koser countered a shot by the ESU sophomore with a spin-around for a second period takedown and added to it, taking a 7-3 lead into the final two minutes.

Hiller came back, scoring a pair of third period takedowns to even the score at nine, and Koser – moments away from a possible match-winning escape as time expired – had to settle for overtime.

Hiller scored a takedown against the SU freshman in sudden victory to wrap up a 12-9 decision.

The Warriors (4-4, 1-4 PSAC) received forfeits in the first two weight classes (125, 133) and never looked back in Tuesday’s dual meet win.

Layton Schmick, the Warriors’ nationally ranked freshman, continued the momentum from Hiller’s dramatic overtime victory, concluding the meet with an emphatic pin at 285.

Brady Carter (125), Ben Makaritis (133), Jacob Remolina (149), Eric Falleni (157), Luke Ciampa (165) and Robert Burke (174) rounded out the Warrior wins.

The Raiders return to action Monday, February 12 at Millersville. Wrestling is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
