State College breaks open tight contest with 6-run fourth, tops MC12s

STATE COLLEGE – Win or go home. With the second season of Little League softball on the line it took some Late inning heroics by the State College 12-year old all-stars to a top rival MIfflin County Thursday night at Sichler Field, 11-5.

It would be a game that was closer than the score would show.

State College used a 6-run fourth inning to break open a close 5-4 contest.

Picking up the win for the Little Lions was Katelyn McShea. McShea went the distance striking out 11 and scattering five hits throughout.

McShea also finished 1-for-2 and 2 runs scored offensively.

Pitching strong but taking the loss was Macy Pietzsch. Pietzsch struck out nine and allowed 10 hits in the game.

Offensively, State College were Victoria Witmer (2-for-3, 2-run home run, 3 runs scored, 2RBIs), Marrisa Yoder (2-for-3, run) and Kate Gilmore (2-for-3, run).

Mifflin County was led by Emma Norman (2-for-3, RBI, run) and Pietzsch (2-for-3, triple).

The Lady Huskies opened the game quickly scoring two runs.

Allison Renninger was hit by a pitch. She stole second and moved to third on an infield single by Norman.

Renninger scored on a State College miscue on the play.

Kierstyn Stroup brought home a tagging Norman on a sacrifice fly in the outfield, taking an early 2-0 advantage.

But the Little Lady Lions rallied back in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Gilmore singled.

She scored on an inside-the-park home run by Witmer. Witmer blasted an opposite field blast that rolled deep into the outfield, tying things at two.

The offense continued to roll for the Lady Huskies as they plated two more in the second.

Chelsea Anewalt led off with a walk. She worked her way around the base paths and scored on a fielders choice by Renninger.

Reagan Sheetz walked as well and later scored on an RBI single to right field, taking back the lead at 4-2.

State College added a run in the bottom of the inning as Elin Fry singled into right field and stole second, third and then scored, making it 4-3.

However, that would be all the State College would get in the inning as MIfflin County held the lead at 4-3.

But McShea was just settling in as she struck out 2-of-3 in the third, keeping the score at 4-3.

But in the third, State college took the lead for the first time, scoring two runs.

Witmer led off the inning with a single into left and later scored.

Teammate McShea also singled and scored, reaching home on a wild pitch.

With the run, State College upped the score to 5-4.

State College kept the MIfflin County bats at bay in the fourth, giving the momentum back to its offense.

The Little Lions made the most of its opportunities in the fourth, scoring six runs and added its lead to 11-4.

Mifflin County went down fighting as it played a run in their last at bats.

But it wouldn’t be enough as State College went onto take the victory.
