Bald Eagle advances off marathon 10-inning contest

By Kenny Varner

MILESBURG – Making the most of the moment.

After battling back and forth for 10 innings, the Bald Eagle Area softball team scored in the bottom off a throwing error by the Red Devils, taking home an exhausting extra inning contest 2-1.

It was a pitcher’s duel from beginning to end as the Eagles got a strong pitching performance from Sierra Albright. Albright finished with a 2-hitter, striking out 18 and went the entire 10 innings to notch the victory.

Central Cambria’s hurler Kam Krazik was almost as successful, allowing four hits, striking out 13.

“When you have a freshman pitcher, freshman catcher, a freshman center fielder and left fielder that got the ball in play. What more can you say about that group. Plus you have the core around them,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Don Lucas. “They (Central Cambria) are a quality team. It was just going to comedown to who got the last at bats. Fortunately, it was us. We like to bunt so that put us in our elements.”

Bald Eagle scored both their runs via a Red Devil miscue.

Central Cambria took advantage of an Eagle error to notch their run as well.

After both pitchers cruised through the first inning, the Eagles took the early lead.

Katelyn Smitchko sent a blast into the left centerfield, both outfielders collided when going for the ball and the ball dropped to the ground, allowing Smitchko to reach second.

Smitchko stole third, putting her in scoring position and then scored on an RBI single down first base easily scoring Smitchko, making it a 1-0 advantage.

Central Cambria battled back in the top of the third.

With one out, Aubry Ruddick singled into left field. Krazik was intentionally walked, putting runners on first and second.

Ruddick stole third and later scored on an overthrow back to the pitcher in between strikes, tying things at one.

From there both defenses took over, both pitchers took over control over the batters.

Inning after inning went by and neither team could crack the seal on the scoreboard.

The two teams entered the 10th and then the international rule came into effect.

International rules put a runner on second to start the inning, trying to help the scoring.

In the top of the inning, Central Cambria got runners on first and second then Albright took over striking out three consecutive batters  to giver her team a chance to win the game.

Bald Eagle used a little 2-out lightning.

With two out and Kendra Uberti on second, Sydney Thompson hit a slow grounder to third and the throw was high bouncing off the glove of the Central Cambria first baseman allowing Uberti to score the winning run.

Bald Eagle will now travel to Central to try to keep its post season run alive.
