WINGATE – Coming off a strong 2022 campaign, the Bald Eagle Area football team was anxious to get the season underway, welcoming the move to the Laurel Highlands.

Friday night, the Eagles made its 2023 debut a strong on as they defeated an always tough Bishop Guilfoyle squad, 17-7.

It would be a nail biter throughout until the final stanza as the Eagles would extend their lead from 10-7 to 17-7 with only 1:23 left.

BG got the game started with its first and only touchdown of the game as Kaden Wyandt scored from three yards out, at 6:31.

A successful PAT put the Mauraders up 7-0.

However, the Eagles came screeching back in the second, posting 10 points.

Quarterback Carson Nagle, who lit it up 175-yards passing and a TD pass, found Nicholas Wible from 30-yards out to cut the Bishop Guilfoyle lead to 7-6. But the successful PAT by place kicked Kaden Burns tied it at the 11.17 mark.

Burns would also be automatic, hitting on a 37-yard field goal attempt, putting his team up at the intermission.

Coming out of the half, both defenses would settle in and hold their ground, not allowing any scoring until late in the fourth.

Cam Dubbs put the game out of reach as he lumbered in from nine yards out to secure the win at 17-7 9 with only 1:23 remaining.

Next game up for Bald Eagle Area is a road game at Central Cambria, Friday, 7 p.m.
