Bellefonte grinds out win over PV

BELLEFONTE – The Bellefonte wrestling team continued its winning ways on Thursday as the went up against fellow Mountain League and Centre foe, Penns Valley, gutting out a 40-13 victory.
It would be a senior night delight for the Red Raiders as they allowed the Rams only four matches the entire evening.
Pacing the way for the “Red and Black” attack was senior Mason Cooper who rallied from being down to Hunter Homan before reversing the match and ending the match in style with a third period win at 182 pounds.
Bellefonte spotted the Penns Valley matmen a 6-0 advantage at first when Darren Yearick defeated Ryan Smith in a nail biter, 3-2. That win came at 120 pounds.
At 126, Penns Valley’s Clayton Royer barely got past Keegan Rothrock, scratching out a 3-1 win.
Cam Coppolo, 138-pounder, gave his team the first victory of the night, posting a 10-2 major decision over Ryan Ripka, cutting the Rams’ lead to 6-4.
“In some cases we did what we needed to do to win. We didn’t wrestle our best but we did what we needed to do win,” Bellefonte coach Mike Maney said. “Anytime you come up Again Centre County rivals you’re always going to expect a tough match.”
Brock Port picked up career win 129 as he found himself in quite the dogfight against at 145 pounds. Port squeezed out 1-0 hard fought victory over a spunky Jared Hurd.
Zach Rosenberger kept Bellefonte’s winning streak alive when he posted a pin over Clayton Upcraft with 1:08 left in the opening period, upping the lead to 16-6.
At 160 pounds, Chase Gardner was able to collect two take downs en route to the 4-2 victory over Andrew Sharer.
Penns Valley ended the Red Raiders fortunes in the 170-pound weight class as Abe Allebach won a convincing 9-4 victory over Lukas McClure, cutting it to 19-9.
With the Cooper pin at 182, the Tex Raiders continued its winning ways.
One hundred ninety five pounder, Brian McChesney picked up two takedowns and a second period reversal to take home the 6-0 win over Cory Rimmey,
Max Mondy, with the second period reversal, was tough enough to hold the lead with those two points en route to the victory over Dillon Covalt, extending the lead to 31-9 for the home team.
Heavyweight Sean Irwin battled through an early injury in his match against Jared Bressler and came out the 6-1 victor as the team’s headed into the final two matches.
Baylor Shunk got the Rams back in the scoring column at 106 with an 11-3 victory over Alex Coppolo.
But things once again ended on a positive note for Bellefonte as 113-pounder Cole Stewart won by forfeit, ending the contest.
