Belleville Girls get first win of the season

By Joshua Yoder

BELLEVILLE – The Thunder took advantage of their shot opportunities in their 3-0 shutout of the Grace Prep Storm in ACAA girls soccer action on Tuesday.

For most of the first half, both teams traded blows with one another looking to get points on the board but neither managed to score on their opportunities.

That was until late into the first half as Belleville Mennonite finally found the back of the net as Chantel Weaver found teammate Carianne Vargas who proceeded to knock the ball in to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.

A little while later in the opening half, Vargas moved the ball over to freshman Leah Reed who then knocked in the second goal of the game giving the Thunder a 2-0 lead at the break.

It was pretty much the same old story in the second half. Much like during the first half, the second half was scoreless for the vast majority of the time.

But once again Reed managed to fight through the tough Grace Prep defense and received a pass from Weaver before firing off a shot that hit the back of the net to put the game on ice.

Reed led the Thunder with two of the three goals scored while Vargas had a goal and an assist each.

In fact, Belleville Mennonite offensively produced 36 shots. However, the Thunder struggled to get the ball past Grace Prep goalkeeper Elizabeth Rhoades who was putting in the work inside the net and collected 33 saves.

Belleville Mennonite is now (1-2-1) and will look to make it two in a row on Friday as the Thunder will host Northumberland County Christian.

Meanwhile Grace Prep falls to (1-1) and will look to rebound on Friday as well as the Storm too will be at home as they welcome Juniata Christian.
