Hidlays continue to dominate; Wolfpack wrestlers take care of Virginia

RALEIGH, N.C. – The #4 NC State wrestling team returned to Reynolds Coliseum for the first time since early December, and won nine of the 10 bouts to defeat Virginia, 32-2.

 

NC State has now son 19 of its 20 ACC individual matches, and improves to 3-0 in conference action.

 

The dual started at 125 pounds, with the Pack scoring bonus points. #14 Jakob Camacho got all five takedowns of the bout, and added in 2:10 of ride time, for a 12-3 major decision.

 

In the first ranked vs. ranked match-up, #15 Kai Orine used a six-point move in third period to score a 10-4 decision over #22 Courtney. #24 Ryan Jack followed with a takedown in the first and 1:39 of ride time for a 4-3 decision at 141 pounds.

 

In another ranked match-up, this at 141 pounds, #3 Tariq Wilson used a takedown in the first and 1:58 of ride time to claim a 5-1 decision over #30 Verkleeren.

 

The Cavs scored their first win at 157 pounds, an upset. After a six-point mover by #10 Ed Scott in the second period, #29 Keating used three takedowns in the third for the 11-10 comeback win.

 

UVA was deducted a team point during the 157 bout and it was 13-2 at the break.

 

The Pack got its third ranked win at 165 pounds, as #21 Thomas Bullard scored the only takedown of the bout with 54 seconds left, and added ride time, to down the previously unbeaten #17 McCoy 4-1.

 

#4 Hayden Hidlay ended his match in the first period. Up 14-0, Hidlay scored a pin with just five seconds left for six team points.

Back-to-back Hidlay brother bonus point wins, as #3 Trent Hidlay scored six takedowns and added 2:52 of ride time for a 16-5 major decision over #25 Battista.

 

Upset at 197 pounds, as #20 Isaac Trumble scored the winning takedown with 21 seconds left in OT to earn a 7-5 decision over #13 Aiello.

In the final battle, another match of ranked wrestlers, #26 Tyrie Houghton scored the winning takedown with just 24 seconds left to defeat #30 Miller 4-2.

 

Up Next: The Pack will be in road action for the final time this season, traveling up to Pitt next Friday night. The dual will be televised on the ACC Network at 7 p.m.
