Instant Classic: BEA volleyball tops Tyrone in four set battle

WINGATE – They had their work cut out for them.

Coming into their first District 6 playoff game, the Bald Eagle volleyball team welcomed in a very intense group from Tyrone.

The Golden Eagles came out sizzling hot before the Lady Eagles were get themselves in sync, taking the first contest.

But in the end, Bald Eagle would take the next three straight games en route to the hard fought 3-1 victory.

Defense led the way for the Eagles as the two teams played long volleys and unforgettable plays on both sides in a unforgettable contest.

It was also a three game sweep of the Lady Golden Eagles during the season.

“They’re (Tyrone) a good team. They bring a lot of heat on offense. They came out rocking and rolling  and ready to go,” said Bald Eagle coach Larry Campbell. “When you beat a team twice it’s tough to get them a third time. They came out and punched in the face. They got up 5-0 and it took us to 15 for us to catch them. Then they made another run again. They won 25-23.”

Things started out Tyrone’s way as they posted the first five points of the game. Picking up service points in the run was Mattie Cherry.

After falling behind with the five point deficit, the Eagles chipped their way back in the game as they came back to tie things at 15.

During the comeback, the Eagles managed to tie the game and rally to go ahead 18-16.

That forced Tyrone to come back out fighting changing the momentum of the game and outlast the Eagles 25-23.

But in the second, the Lady Eagles battled back in a big way coming out strong and ending even stronger.

Despite falling behind to start their second game in a row, Bald Eagle battled back and forth with Tyrone and slowly built up a 15-12 advantage.

With the lead, the Eagles rolled on a 7-0 run with six service points going to final run.

Using that run to its favor, Bald Eagle tied the match at one with a 25-14 victory.

In the third game of the night, the two continued its strong play on both sides.

Like in the second game, the Eagles went on a run  and it continued to keep the lead as it went up and took the 25-20.

Both teams saved the best for last as the game was a back and forth battle with both teams exchanging g the leads numerous times before the Eagles got clutch drop play by Ava Stere to put the game and series away, giving her team the win.

Bald Eagle Area will be back in action Friday.
