Jersey Shore tops Bald Eagle Area 42-0

WINGATE – Coming into tonight’s game against Bald Eagle Area, the Jersey Shore football team was looking to give their coach Tom Gravish a rewarding homecoming as the former Bald Eagle grad returned to his Alma Mater.

After a game that was closer than the score may indicate, the Bulldogs just that coming home with a 42-0 shut out of the Eagles.

Going into the intermission, the game was only a 15-0 contest.

“We were a little out of whack offensively to start this game off. We were playing lights out defensively. We gave them a couple plays to give them life but our defense came out strong on a couple of goalie stances,” said Gravish. “We have some tough kids on our defense and they happened to make the plays. Hats off to Bald Eagle. They have some of the finest players that put the uniform on in school history.”

The Bulldogs defense only allowed 41-yards rushing and 165-yards passing on the night.

Despite the slow start, Jersey Shore quarterback Tanner Lorson ran for a game-high 106 yards and passed for 129 en route to the victory.

Despite the loss, Bald Eagle quarterback Jaden Jones threw for 165 yards, leading the offense for the Eagles.

In the first quarter, it looked as though the Eagles would catch the first break of the game when Tyler Bumbarger snatched a bouncing ball that went off the helmet of a Bulldogs player and into his hands and he ran it back for what looked to be a 43-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

However, in high school you can’t advance a fumble so Bald Eagle got the ball on the 48-yard line of Jersey Shore.

The Eagles would get it to the 36 but the drive would stall there.

On the next drive, the Eagles marched down the field, highlighted by a Jones pass to Tommy Snyder that would put the Eagles at the Bulldogs one.

But the Bulldogs defense stiffened and kept them out of the end one and off the scoreboard.

Going into the second quarter, Jersey Shore made its way onto the scoreboard.

Tanner Lorson marched it in from 10-yards out for the TD. The cam Allison kick failed, making it 6-0 with 7:10 left in the half.

Minutes later, with the help of some high snaps from Bald Eagle, the Bulldogs added a Saftey when a snap flew over the head of Jones and out of the end zone, making it 8-0 with the safety.

With less than two minutes left, Jersey Shore upped its lead to 15-0 when Lorson found Anthony Shaffer on a 4-yard touchdown reception. Shaffer also has an interception in the opening period.

Bald Eagle had its 2-minute still working well and was able to march down the field and get the ball to the six with six seconds left.

But another strong defensive play by the Bulldogs secured the 15-0 halftime advantage.

“We played the first half with all of our guys and we lost two more guys in the first half and then we really started subbing,” said Bald Eagle coach Jesse Nagle. “The big thing is they held us inside the red zone three times. We should have been winning 21-6 or 21-15 at halftime.”

In the third quarter, Lorson’s 35-yard TD pass to Stanton Westlin made it 22-0 on the Allison kick at 7:35.

From there Bald Eagle started to take out its starters and chose to fight another day.

Lorson continued his strong night scoring on a 29-yard run and the PAT failing, making it a 28-0 lead with 4:08 left in the third.

Dawson Sechrist rounded out the third quarter scoring as he scored on a 16-yard TD run with an Allison kick), 1:14 putting the game into Mercy rule status.

Jersey Shore scored one last time in the fourth to take the game 42-0.
