Juniata holds Mustangs to only two goals
MIFFLINTOWN – The high scoring Midd-West boys soccer team came rolling into Mifflintown Saturday morning with the hopes of providing a lot of offense and picking up a win against the Juniata Indians.
However, the Indians’ defense showed that it wasn’t ready to have too many goals scored on them like the past Mustang opponents.
Goalie Walter Dessin was tough for Juniata as he battled his way for 12 saves in a 2-0 loss to Midd-West.
The Mustangs wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Cole Sauer found a crack in the Indians armor early landing in the back of the net with 35:47 left in the opening period.
From there, both teams transition games started to take over as they went back and forth with each trying to gain control of a strong time consuming drive.
After a couple minutes, Midd-West was able to push the ball into the Juniata back-third, putting pressure on Dessin and the Juniata back-line.
The Indians were successful and the ball got back the ball and got it to Tad Shellenberger who coasted down the field on a breakaway but before he could get a shot off he was stopped by the Mustangs back-line.
Defensively, the Indians were able to fend off the Mustangs for the rest of the period.
Dessin was even able to prevent a penalty shot from going in.
After one, the contest was still anyone’s game with Midd-West holding a slight 1-0 advantage.
Midd-West outshot the Indians 16-1 and held the advantage on corner opportunities by a 4-0 margin.
In the second half, the Indians shown signs of life as they took the ball downfield and pressed the Mustangs back-third.
Unfortunately, the Indians weren’t able to muster a shot.
