Lady Huskies hit their way to a D6 title bid

LEWISTOWN – Quick and painless.

The MIfflin County softball team little time in directing their path Wednesday, taking down Altoona 16-0 in a 3-inning mercy rule contest.

With the win, the Lady Huskies are set on a collision course with the newly crowned Mid-Penn Champions State College in the District 6 championship that will be played Wednesday at Saint Francis.

It will be the third time the two will meet this season.

Mifflin County hurler Madison Wolfgang was a walk short of pitching a perfect game but was still able to get the No-hitter over the Mountain Lions.

Offensively, the Huskies afternoon was highlighted by a Dakota Hershberger grand slam in the 16-run first inning. Teammate Riley Hine finished with two hits.

In the top of the first, Altoona got two quick outs.

But on the third batter, the Huskies defense came in clutch early robbing Altoona of a hit.

Grace Glasgow sent a sizzler down the first baseline and a diving Hershberger stopped it but the ball tipped off her mitt.

However, second baseman Jaylee Bodtorf, who was alertly backing up the play, scooped up the ball and got it back to Hershberger in time for the out. The play ended the inning as well and set the stage for a very anxious offense, chomping at the bit to get started.

“We started our first with good defense behind us and good pitching and plays that really got the ball rolling,” said MIfflin County coach Craig Weston. “We followed up with some good hits. We needed some momentum and that’s what we got in  that inning.

In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Huskies brought 23 batters to the plate en route to the 16 runs.

With one out in the first, Arika Henry singled to start the rally.

Peyton McClure reached on a miscue by Altoona scoring Henry.

Hershberger followed with a fly to left field that hit off the glove of the Mountain Lion’s outfielder, allowing McClure to score and Hershberger to  stay at second.

Hine delivered an RBI double into the centerfield gap, scoring Hershberger, upping the score to 3-0.

With two outs, Alexis O’Brien kept the inning going with a walk.

Bodtorf followed with a walk of her own, loading the bases.

McKenna Yoder reached on a slow grounder that the third baseman held, allowing Hine to score.

Wolfgang helped her own cause, notching an RBI walk, making it a 5-0 contest.

Henry also notched an RBI walk minutes later.

Peyton McClure took one for the team as she was plunked by an Altoona offering, making it a 7-run inning.

Hershberger took an offering a launched it up and over Left field for the Grand Slam, upping it to an 11-0 lead.

Mifflin County added five more runs taking the commanding 16-0 victory.

The Huskies finished the game with seven hits, 10 walks and 16 runs.
