MC wrestlers dominate; SC finished third in D6 championships

ALTOONA – The Tri-County contingent crowned eight champions and qualified 34 for regionals at the District 6 Class 3A championships on Saturday in Altoona.

Mifflin County had four champions in Nic Allison (113), Kyler Everly (160), Trey Shoemaker (189), and Jaxson Pupo (215). State College had three champs in Asher Cunningham (120), Pierson Manville (138), and Nick Pavlechko (215). Bellefonte had one champion in Jude Swisher at 145.

The Huskies pushed 11 of 12 wrestlers through to the Northwest Regionals and came away with the team title by a 12-point margin (201.5-189.5) over Central Mountain. In addition, Kirby Martin won District 6 Class 3A Coach of the Year with his staff winning Coaching Staff of the Year.

The Little Lions finished third in the team standings with 160 points. The Red Raiders scored 133.5 points to place fourth.

Juniata also had a solid day with six advancing to regionals – the most by the Indians since moving up to 3A.

Nic Allison joined Kenny Whitsel, Hayden and Trent Hidlay, and Trey Kibe as the only four-time district champions in county history with his championship at 113. Everly won his second title.

“To be up there with those names doesn’t seem real. I’ll definitely be happy the next few days, and then it’s back to work. I feel great right now,” Allison said. “I’ve wrestled the kid before, and as soon as he shot in, I saw his knee was close to his head, and he wasn’t moving it, so I knew I could lock up the cradle. I used it, locked it up tight, and got the fall, and there you have it, four-time district champ. It’s such a crazy feeling because my name is up there with some of the all-time greats.”

Parker Kearns (152) and Anson Wagner (215) came in second, with Hunter Johnson (120), Blake Aumiller (132), Deakon Schaeffer (145), and Avery Aurand (172) finishing third. Jacob Cunningham placed fourth at 138. Styers Oden took sixth at 106 but failed to qualify for regionals. Colby Seiler did not participate at 126 because of a shoulder injury.

Manville, just a sophomore, won his second title for the Little Lions. Braden Newby (172) and Carter Weaverling (189) came in second, while Jonathan Coates (106), Jacob Campbell (126), Josh Hershbine (160), and Shane Focht (285) placed third.

Bellefonte went 1-3 in the finals, with top–ranked Swisher the lone winner. The Penn recruit won his second title with two second-place finishes on his stellar resume. Finishing second for the Red Raiders were Cameron Garcia (106), Garrett Choates (113), and Aidan O’Shea (132). Gage Long was third at 138,with Noah Weaver (126), Nate Smith (152), and Tyler Putnam (285) taking fourth.

Grady Garrison (160) and Addison Shawley (215) were sixth,but failed to qualify for regionals. Nash Irwin (172) and Wyatt Lowry (189) didn’t place.

Casey and Taylor Smith finished second for Juniata at 120 and 126, respectively. Daniel Painter (132), Josh Bomberger (160), and Jonathan Kauffman (215) came in fourth. Joey Bomberger placed fifth at 106 but still earned a trip to regionals because District 8 doesn’t have enough qualifying entrants.

Amelia Smith (113), Harrison Mummah (172), and Lane Peiper (189) took sixth but didn’t qualify for regionals. Jordan Cruz (285) didn’t participate because of injury.
