LEWISTOWN – Red Land capitalized on its opportunities at the plate where Mifflin County did not as the Huskies fell to the Patriots by the final score of 4-0 in a Mid-Penn Conference baseball game Thursday afternoon.

The Huskies had themselves a big opportunity to score in the bottom half of the first inning as they had Farrell Souders and Xavier Smith on first and second base but with only one out.

Red Land pitcher Kaden Peifer then got Jaxson Pupo to hit a line shot that went right to third baseman Brett Minnich for the second out. However, a passed ball allowed both Souders and Smith to move over a base to put both runners in scoring position.

But Peifer found a way to get out of the jam and got Luke Lyter to strikeout and leave both Souders and Smith stranded on base.

Then in the bottom of the second, Mifflin County had another chance to score again with Doug Weaver on second and two outs before Peifer got Hayden Yoder to ground out to short to again prevent any runs for Mifflin County.

The Patriots then got themselves on the board in the top half of the third inning as Brady Ebbert tapped a single to center field that brought home Mikey Shenk. Cooper Artley then blasted a double to left field that scored Ebbert and appeared as though was also going to score Logan Sanabria but the Huskies prevented it from happening as Souders moved the ball to Smith who fired a shot to Pupo who then applied the tag for the out.

Mifflin County had a pair of big defensive plays throughout the game as well. Another one of those plays came in the top of the fourth inning as the Patriots had runners on second and third and only one out. After a pitch from Hine, Pupo caught David Thomas napping on the basepads and fired the ball to Smith at third base and forced a run down where Smith sent the ball back to Pupo and tagged out Thomas.

Then in the top of the sixth inning, Red Land was pushing for a massive inning offensively as Landon Black had come on in relief of Hine and struggled in the frame. Black was able to get an out, but was pulled from the game with the bases loaded.

Ryan Esh picked his teammate up though as Esh managed to get Peifer to grounded into a one, six , three double play to end the inning and kept the runners out of home plate.

For the Patriots, Peifer got the start and kept the Mifflin County bats in check, giving up only five hits through five and a third innings of work with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Souders, Smith, Pupo, Hine and Landen Eichhorn each collected a hit in the game.

Mifflin County is now (3-11) and will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday as the Huskies will travel to face the Central Dauphin Rams.
