Mifflin County field hockey falls in overtime thriller

LEWISTOWN -It was such a heartbreaker for the Lady Huskies Friday night, coming just a minute short of a victory in Mid-Penn contest. 

The Mifflin County field hockey team were shocked Friday after Carlisle’s Alexis Bear posted a shot with 1:04 left, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Thundering Herd’s Vivian Stoner scored off of a pass by Chloe Ollermiller with 3:53 left in the extra period to steal the win from the Huskies.

With the game coming out of the intermission, Carlisle came out with a sudden burst of energy, taking the ball deep into the Huskies defensive side of the field.

But Mifflin County was resilient on defense, fending off the early drive in the third period.

Mifflin County struck first in the third when Adria Hartzler scored off of a from Monica Druckenmiller pass at 8:39 to make it a 3-1 contest.

Druckenmiller was strong in the contest as she was a strong field general with her pin point passes and clutch stops out front.

But before the Huskies knew what hit them, Carlisle bounced back with a goal of their own.

Molly Best got a clear shot on goal and sent it home on an unassisted goal with 6:12 left in the third.

Both defenses took over from there until late in the fourth.

With a corner opportunity, Bair blasted a shot just out of reach of Mifflin County goalie Sophie McCurdy, tying it and sending g things into an extra stanza.

With time running out, Vivian Stoner sent it home and gave the visitors the victory at 3:53.

Mifflin County started with the strong start as it took its first possession down into the Carlisle backfield and was knocking on the door early.

After controlling the possession for most of the first four minutes of action, the Lady Huskies got its first break when a tackle by Carlisle in its own circle, the Huskies were awarded a penalty shot.

It would be Hailee Sheetz that would hit a blast past MacKenzie Mulholland for the first points of the game.

Minutes later, Sheetz was at it again finding the back of the cage after Mifflin County pounded the ball down in Thundering Herd territory.

Both defense fended off the defenses the rest of the quarter, giving the Huskies a 2-0 advantage going into the second stanza.

Carlisle battled its way back into the game early in the quarter when  Ollermiller broke through the Huskies defense and cut the lead to 2-1 on the unassisted goal.

Carlisle held the advantage over Mifflin County in the shots on goal department by a 14-12 margin and also in the corner opportunities by a 13-6 mark.

McCurdy finished with 10 saves in the contest while Mulholland had 5.
