Mifflin County Husky Reese Cubbison closed out his cross country season at Hershey Saturday at the PIAA State Championship. Cubbison, a sophomore, placed 180th out of 239 finishers in 18:10 in the AAA division.
Drew Griffith from Butler was first in 15:23.  Council Rock North won the team title.
The starting box assignment  had Cubbison placed in the last box on the far left. There was no one else on his left. Beside him to his right were 238 competitors eager for the starter’s gun to fire. Silence. Then bang! with a stampede in the next instance as runners jostled in the melee.
“Reese got off the line well.  He then got shoved a little more to the outside.  This actually allowed him to be free from a lot of traffic as the swarm surged for position on his right.”
The course is flat and down hill in the first mile. The second mile is hilly with mile three flat until a long uphill slope then flat to the finish.
“This course is around a minute slower than our home course in Reedsville. Reese’s  time from District are comparable with today’s effort.”
After getting out and in position the first mile Reese ran a nice second half.
“Reese had a very good day.  This past week at practice we talked about that he belonged in the state championship. He was composed and focused on what he could control and didn’t let outside things bother him.  I’m excited that he has the opportunity of two more years to return.”
Asked how his overall experience was today Reese replied, “
“Good! It was really cool. It was a very quick start and probably the most exciting race I ran. There was a lot of energy around and so many people cheering you on.
It’s a big meet and it was a lot of fun.”
