Mifflin County Volleyball sweeps Central Mountain

By Kenny Varner

LEWISTOWN – It was a perfect night to be a Husky.

Monday night the Mifflin County Huskies volleyball team went up against a feisty Central Mountain team at home with the “Purple and Black Attack” fans routing for their home team.

It wasn’t an easy start for the Huskies as they got down early in the opening game but bounced back to go toe-to-toe with the Wildcats and turned on the afterburners and won the contest 26-24.

From there, it was an easy road for the Lady Huskies as they finished the night with a 25-12 and 25-18 wins, respectively.

The first one was slow starting, of course.  I don’t what it is to get their gears in motion. But you have to get into them that this is a really good chance for you to play together as a team, a chance for you run plays, a chance for you to really show your skills and a chance for us to capitalize,” Mifflin County coach Krystena Mayo said. So, I think they started to realize, yes, let’s do this. Let’s play our positions fine and let’s pass the ball fine. That’s what they did and I was really proud of how they came together as a team, how they started to make plays. They started to play real smart. They were finding the open spots on the floor. That’s what happens when you play well.”

In the first game, the two teams started out in a stalemate for the first 12 points as the two were tied at six.

Central Mountain went on a 5-1 scoring run of on the service points of McKenzie Hanna, who put her team went ahead 10-7.

The Wildcats would keep Mifflin County at arms distance for much of the contest, keeping the lead as the game started to come down the stretch, leading 23-20.

But the Lady Huskies were cool under pressure as they mounted a last second comeback.

Mifflin County cut it to 23-21 on an important side out as the Huskies held their energy to allow a long serve by the Wildcats go by.

Kiana Sechler kept her composure and picked up a service point on a serve that didn’t get returned.

However, Central Mountain inched one point closer to the win as it got back the ball on a side out, making it 24-22.

Mifflin County battled to keep the game going, again forcing another side out, bringing to within a 24-23 advantage.

Freshman Audrey Jordan finished out the opener in fine fashion, posting the final three points of the game and picking up the last point an ace, ending it at 26-24.

Mifflin County used its last second momentum and carried it into the second game as the team took a close contest and then exploded for the 25-12 win.

Highlighting the contest was Caitlyn Kick’s nine consecutive service points, turning a 8-8 tie into a 17-8 Mifflin County advantage.

The young group never took their foot off the gas as it continue to dominate the second game from there.

Leading 19-9, Mifflin County server Madison Tate hit another four consecutive service points, putting the game on ice at 23-10 en route to the 25-12 win.

In the final game, Mifflin County continued its strong teamwork and hard work on the court to slowly roll onto the 25-18 victory.
