Mifflinburg spoils East Juniata debut

It was a tough night for the East Juniata field hockey team as they took an early defeat to Mifflinburg 7-1.

In the first half, Mifflinburg got goals from Camryn Murray (28:28), Valerie Rakerd (15:47), Mara Shuck (4:58) and Angela Reamer (3:12).

Mifflinburg got it going early on the second half as well as it got goals from Reamer (26:35), Murray (20:35), and Murray (18:2) while EJ got its goal from Kyli Dowling at 8:52.

“This was the first game of the season.  Having a long weekend, the girls started a little slow, but overcame that and had the ball in our offensive circle for a good part of the game.  Mifflinburg scored first, but the girls came back fighting,” said East Juniata coach Harley Straub. “I think we caught Mifflinburg off guard having the ball in their defensive circle as often as we did.  I think the girls surprised themselves by how much the offense had the ball.”

“Like previous seasons, the girls need to work on finishing and scoring.  They need to connect with each other.  Kyli Dowling scored in the second half, but it was a team effort getting the ball in the circle.  That showed the girls never gave up and continued to push themselves.  There are many great things that happened in the game, and we are looking to keep that going tomorrow.”

Mifflinburg led in shots on goal by a 13-9 margin and held the advantage in corners 11-7.  The Tigers goalie Emily Carolus has six while Mifflinburg got four saves from Breanna Roush.
