Mount Union Dominates Claysburg!

By Joshua Yoder

MOUNT UNION – Mount Union took care of business against the Claysburg-Kimmel Bulldogs in its final home game of the regular season by the final score of 62-6 in ICC football action Friday night.

The Trojans pushed the pedal to the metal as within the first three minutes of the game, Mount Union found itself in the endzone as Josh Ryan powered his way up the middle for a 17 yard run to put the Trojans up 7-0.

Ryan came back for more and scored again for Mount Union and completed a 15 run a few minutes later but a missed extra point made it a 13-0 lead.

However, that didn’t slow down the Trojan offense as freshman Nasir Collins burst through the Claysburg defense for a six yard touchdown run. But another missed extra point attempt led to a 19-0 lead.

Then in the second quarter, Ryan made his presence felt again and muscled his way into the endzone completing an eight yard run. Bryce Danish then scored the two point conversation.

Danish then took his turn later in the period and scored a six yard run before Ryan completed the two point conversation. Danish then added a 20 yard touchdown run and kicked the extra point to give the Trojans a 42-0 lead.

The duo of Danish and Ryan connected again late in the second quarter with just 29 seconds remaining as Danish launched the ball over to Ryan who proceeded down the sideline for the score going 15 yards giving Mount Union a 49-0 lead at the break.

For the entire first half of the game, the Bulldogs were held to negative six yards on the ground while having 60 yards in the air for a grand total of 54 yards of total offense.

On the flipside, Mount Union compiled a total of 305 yards of total offense in the opening half with Ryan getting 116 yards on the ground on 10 carries. Collins also had a big half on the ground in the first half with eight carries for 94 yards.

Things got crazy real in the third quarter of the game as literally on the first play of the quarter, Claysburg fumbled the ball and it was picked up by Hunter Steel who hustled his way into the endzone for a scoop and score.

Then with just over a minute remaining of the quarter, the Bulldogs managed to get their first points of the game as quarterback Anthony McGeary found receiver Remington Diehl with a deep pass that went 41 yards for the touchdown. However, the kick was blocked making the score 56-6.

The lone score of the fourth quarter came from Micah Atherton who broke loose with a massive run that went 40 yards for the score.

Overall the defense was also a major factor for the Trojans creating numerous turnovers including a pair of big interceptions as well as some fumble recoveries that stopped any momentum that Claysburg-Kimmel had offensively.

With this win, Mount Union moves up to (8-1) and will play its regular season finale next Friday as the Trojans hit the road to do battle with the Karns City Gremlins.
