Rogers /Bellefonte pick up late-inning win over rival BEA

By Kenny Varner

MILESBURG – Pitcher(s) perfect.

When Bellefonte and Bald Eagle get together on the softball diamond both teams raise their games.

Tuesday they both brought an A-plus performances in a contest that wouldn’t be decided until the seventh inning.

In the end, Bellefonte manufactured a lone run to take home the 1-0 victory.

But the main story was the performance of the both pitchers.

Neither team ended with any extra base hits.

The Lady Raiders hurler, Lexi Rogers tossed a one-hitter with eight strike outs while Bald Eagle Area’s Maddie Peters tossed a three-hitter an the lone run was unearned.

The game flew by at record speed as the first five innings went less than an hour.

“We really competed today. Coming from yesterday when I didn’t think we had our best stuff to today I thought we ready to go,”said Bellefonte Coach Travis Foster. “It’s easy to say it’s Bald Eagle. It’s easy to say they’re seven miles away. It’s easy to say this is our natural rival. We want to go into every contest  with the same level of play. Today we came ready to play.”

With the game scoreless going into the seventh, Sara DeHaas reaches on an Eagle miscue. She then stole second.

She moved up to third on a fielders choice by teammate Emily Pugh.

With one out, Lissi Przybys and sent a high fly ball to deep center, scoring DeHaas as she tug up and scored, making it 1-0.

Going into their final at bats, the Lady Eagles tried to rally back and were almost successful in tying the. Contest.

With one out, Marilee Caldana hit a Boiling single into center, ending Rogers no-hot bid.

Caldana was replaced by pinch runner Brynne Bisel.

Bisel stole second and moved up to third on a wild pitch.

However, Rogers ended things with a strike out to Peters and a fly out by Autumn Tobias.

“They (Bellefonte) played well. Their pitchers had a lot to do with that. I thought our pitch selection was t really the best today. But it has a lot to do with her (Rogers) too. We had one hit and at Tyrone we had we had two. Right now is not a good time to have your bats go dead,” said Bald Eagle coach Don Lucas. “Again, a lot has to do with who you are facing. Their run was unearned. This was one of those games that you learn from. We lost the battle but we didn’t lose the war. That is pretty much what I said to them.”

With the win, the two teams split the season series as the Eagles won the first contest in a 9-inning thriller that took the better of two days to complete due to a rain storm that ended the contest going into the sixth earlier in the season.

Both teams will finish up their season in the next week and both look like a sure Lock for a post season berth.
