Shoemaker one of Three Raider wrestlers place at Dr. Ken Ober Memorial Invitational

Shoemaker led SU contingent with second-place finish at 197 pounds

The Shippensburg University wrestling team took a break from its dual meet schedule Saturday by taking part in the Dr. Ken Ober Memorial Invitational hosted by Elizabethtown College.

The Raiders earned three place-winners at the individual tournament, highlighted by freshman Diesel Koser’s (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) second-place finish at 197 pounds. Sophomore Owen Koch (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and sophomore Trey Shoemaker (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) placed sixth at 184 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively.

Koser pinned a pair of opponents and won a 10-0 major decision over another on the road to the 197-pound final. There he matched up against Roanoke’s Lorenzo Pellot. Pellot, also a freshman, won a close 12-7 decision to win the 197-pound title.

Shoemaker pinned his way to a pair of victories in the same 197-pound bracket. One win away from a possible meeting with teammate Koser in the final, Shoemaker’s momentum was stalled by Pellot, dropping a 7-3 decision to the eventual champion.

Shoemaker lost a close 4-2 decision to Roanoke’s Cam Cavins in the consolation bracket before bowing out via medical forfeit in the fifth-place match. Shoemaker previously pinned Cavins to earn a semifinal berth.

Koch also started strong, tech falling his first opponent, then earning a 4-3 decision in sudden victory over Centenary (N.J.) 184-pounder Angelo Piazza.

Koch dropped a 4-1 decision to Rochester Institute of Technology wrestler Zach Swyers in a 184-pound semifinal. He was forced to medically forfeit his next two scheduled matches during wrestlebacks, resulting in a sixth-place finish.

Elsewhere, freshman Eli Bounds (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) impressed in his season debut, winning two matches via pin and one via tech fall to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at 141 pounds.

Freshman Liam Bostrom (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) posted a pair of wins, including one via pin, to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at 174.

Sophomore Anthony Lavish (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell Egan) earned three victories in the 149-pound bracket. Sophomore Cole Lang and junior Connor Livingston (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) also posted multiple wins.

Next up, the Raiders return to dual meet action with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tuesday, Feb. 6 at East Stroudsburg. Wrestling will get underway at 6 p.m.
